늘 자동차 만드는 소리만 들리던 부평공장에, 어제 저녁 주의 깊게 들으셨다면 크리스마스 캐롤과 함께 웃음소리와 킥킥거리는 소리를 들으실 수 있었을 겁니다. 이는 매년 지엠대우가 보육원 및 장애인 시설 아동을 초청해서 개최하는 크리스마스 행사가 있었습니다.
파티에는 지엠대우 직원과 외국인 임직원들(대부분 산타 옷을 입은)이 마이크 아카몬 사장과 150명의 어린이들과 함께했습니다. 정말 멋졌고, 또 감동적이었습니다. 어린이들에게 마술공연을 펼친 마술사와 진기하고 멋진 비누거품 공연을 선보인 버블맨도 있었습니다.
그러나 저에게 최고의 기쁨을 준 것은 바로 참여했던 어린이들이었습니다. ‘예림원’은 요들송을 무대에 올렸고, ‘시온육아원’ 친구들은 훌륭한 춤솜씨를 뽐냈죠. ‘광명원’ 성악 공연자가 들려준 목소리는 용감했을 뿐만 아니라 놀라웠습니다. ‘보라매보육원’은 그들의 ‘난타’ 연습에 많은 시간을 쏟았을 겁니다. 왜냐면 그들은 완벽하게 호흡을 맞추었거든요. ‘신명보육원’의 스포츠 댄스를 보았고 ‘볕바라기’ 친구의 아름다운 피아노 솔로에 이어 우리 모두는 ‘시온육아원’의 크리스마스 캐롤로 저녁을 마무리했습니다.
우리는 어린이들을 위해 맛있는 저녁 식사를 준비했고, 모두들 좋아했습니다. 식사가 끝나고 아카몬 사장님은 직접 모든 어린이들에게 선물을 나누어 주었습니다. 모두에게 말이죠. 여자 어린이들은 커다란 곰 인형을, 남자 어린이들
은 장난감 로봇을 받았습니다.
제 아내와 두 아이도 이날 행사에 참석했습니다. 저는 지난해에도 가족과 함께 왔는데요, 제 가족들이 올해도 꼭 오겠다고 했거든요. 제 가족들에게 있어 이 어린이들과 만나고 함께 시간을 보내는 것은 매우 소중한 일입니다. 제 아내와 저는 ‘도움이 필요한 사람을 도움으로써 진정한 글로벌 시민이 될 수 있다는 것’을 제 아이들에게 어린 시절부터 보여주는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 저와 제 아내에게 있어 크리스마스는 바로 ‘베푸는 것’입니다. 단순명료하죠. 저는 많은 아이들과 “하이 파이브”를 했고 다른 이들은 포옹과 가득한 미소로 화답했습니다.
이 날 파티가 끝나고 저는 주차장에 서 있었습니다. 이미 어둠이 깔린 지엠대우에 크리스마스 트리가 반짝이고 있었죠. 자그마한 아이들은 종종거리며 버스로 향했고, 즐거움과 웃음소리로 왁자했습니다. 그들은 포만감과 선물을 안고 집으로 향했습니다. 모두가 따뜻한 사랑과 함께 했다는 사실도 말이죠.
진심으로 다른 사람을 도와보세요. 종교가 있건 없건, 어떤 종교를 가지고 있던 간에, 예상치 않았던 어떤 것을 해 보세요. 스스로도 놀랄 겁니다. 정말 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 말이죠. 그건 그리 어려운 일이 아닙니다. 결국, 마음먹는 것이 중요한 것이죠. 우리 모두가 이렇게 한다면 우리의 세상이 얼마나 더 나아질지 상상해 보세요… 제가 어젯밤에 다시금 확신했던 점을 여러분도 발견하시리라 생각합니다. 그건 받는 것보다 주는 것이 낫다는 것이죠.

Merry Christmas Kids
Last night, amid the noise of workers building cars at our Bupyeong manufacturing facilities, if you listened carefully, you could hear laughs, giggles and Christmas carols. It was GM Daewoo's annual Happy Christmas Parties for orphans and others who have had difficulties in their lives.
GM Daewoo employees and ISPs (many dressed as Santa) joined President & CEO Mike Arcamone and 150 children at the party. It was terrific, and at times, I must admit, emotional for me. There was a magician who played tricks on the kids, and a Bubble Man who had a unique and terrific performance.,
But for me, the best entertainment were the kids themselves. Yerimwon did some yodelling on stage. The Zion Home proved they were excellent dancers. The voice performance by Kwangmeongwon was not only brave, but stunning. You could tell the Boramae Orphanage spent a lot of time on their Nanta drumming because they were totally synchronized. We also had a sports dance from the Shinmyeong Orphanage, a beautiful piano solo by Byeotbaragi and of course, we ended the evening with Christmas carols from the Zion Home.
We treated the kids to a gourmet dinner, which they loved. And then President Arcamone handed out gifts to all of the children. That's right, every child got a gift. The girls received a huge stuffed bear and the boys, a toy robot.
My wife and two children attended this event. I brought them to it last year and they asked me to come this year. It was very important to them to meet the kids and spend time with them. It was also very important to my wife and me to show my children at a young age, that they can become true global citizens by helping people who need help. For my wife and me, this is what Christmas is all about: giving. It is that simple. I gave many kids a "high 5" and others were just looking for a hug and the well-deserved return of a smile.
I stood out in the parking lot after the party ended. It was dark and GM Daewoo's Christmas lights were flashing. As the little ones scurried to their cars and buses, there were screams of delight and many laughs. They went home with full stomachs, gifts, and most of all, the knowledge that they are loved.
Do me a favor this holiday season, regardless of your religion or whether you are religious or not: do something unexpected. Surprise yourself. Help someone in need. Help someone who really needs help. It doesn't have to be a big thing. After all, it is the thought that counts. Can you imagine how better off our world would be if we all did this. I think you will find out what was affirmed for me again last night: it is better to give than to receive.
