사실 이번 주말에 있었던 서울 스노우잼에서 누가 우승했는지는 잘 모르겠습니다. 하지만 여러분이 저에게 물으신다면, 저는 이 독특한 대회의 진정한 승자는 바로 서울시와 오세훈 시장이라 답하겠습니다.
이번 행사는 말 그대로 환상적이었습니다.
이번 서울 스노우 잼 이벤트를 광화문 광장에서 열기로 한 오세훈 시장의 결정은 매우 놀랍습니다. 오직 유럽과 북미에서만 열려왔던 이 독특한 행사를 아시아에서 처음으로 개최할 뿐만 아니라, 오 시장은 서울에서 가장 넓은 공간인 광화문에 거대한 스키점프를 설치했습니다. 서울을 세계에 알리기에 이보다 더 좋은 배경장식이 있을까요.
지난 토요일 밤에 외국친구들 (독일과 스위스에서 온) 과 가족들을 데리고 행사장을 찾았습니다. 우리는 춥지 않은 저녁시간에 이 글로벌 도시의 중심에 서서 세계 최고의 묘기 스노우보드 선수들이 34미터 높이로 설치된 100미터 길이의 스키점프대 – 세종대왕 동상과 이순신장군 동상 사이의 북쪽 끝 부분에 설치된- 에서 펼치는 다양한 묘기 – 몇 번의 360도 턴 후의 nail jump 라던가 - 를 볼 수 있었습니다. 우리는 눈 앞의 묘기만큼이나 이 행사장의 독특함에 대해 계속 이야기를 나눴습니다.
제 생각에는 광화문이라는 장소 자체가 이번 행사를 더욱 특별하게 만들어준 것 같습니다. 전세계 어디에서 이와 같은 행사를 볼 수 있을까요? 어디에도 없습니다. 세계 곳곳에서 온 (170 개 이상의 나라들) 사람들은 행사뿐만이 아니라, 서울시 공무원들의 창의력과 상상력을 엿 볼 수가 있었습니다. 이는 코리아 브랜드와 그 수도 서울에 끊임없는 이익이 될 것입니다.
그리고 동시에, 똑같이 중요하게 광화문 광장은 사람들을 위한 이벤트 라는 그것이 사용되어야 할 목적에 맞게 쓰였습니다. 오세훈 시장에게는 서울에 있는 경기장 중 한 곳을 이벤트 장소로 선택하는 것이 훨씬 쉬웠을 것입니다. 하지만, 오 시장은 이 행사를 시민들 바로 앞으로 데려왔습니다. 그것은 강한 리더의 “대범한 결정” 이었습니다. 이는 한국을 사계절, 심지어 겨울에도 오고 싶게 만들 겁니다.
이 이벤트가 재선을 노린 것이라는 분들도 있는 것으로 압니다. 하지만 시장은 무엇을 해야 합니까? 재선이 있다고 해서, 서울을 세계에 알리는 일을 멈춰야 한다는 것은 아니겠지요? 그 일은 멈추지도 않고 멈출 수도 없겠지요.
교통도 완벽하게 정리되었습니다. 나는 행사장소로 갈 때나 토요일 밤에 끝나고 나올 때, 단 한가지의 불편함도 발견하지 못했습니다. 서울시 경찰 분들도 수고하셨습니다.
서울에서 사는 한 명의 외국인으로써, 내 가족에게 다시 못할 경험을 안겨준 이 “host city” 가 자랑스럽습니다. 월드 클래스 도시의 심장에서 열린 월드 챔피언십!!

“Seoul Snow Jam – Showcased City to the World”
I am not sure who won the Seoul Snow Jam this weekend. If you ask me, I’d say the real winner in this unique competition is the city of Seoul and Mayor Oh Se-hoon.
I thought this weekend event was fantastic. That simple.
Mayor Oh’s decision to hold the Seoul Snow Jam event at Gwanghwamun Plaza was ingenious. A unique event, which has only been held in Europe and North America, comes to Asia for the very first time and Mayor Oh, thinking big, really big, decided to build a massive ski jump in perhaps the city’s grandest area – Gwanghwamun. What a splendid backdrop to showcase Seoul to the world.
I took my family to the event on Saturday night with a large group of foreign friends – from Germany and Switzerland. We had a terrific time, on a mild evening, standing in the center of this global city, watching some of the world’s best trick snowboarders roar down a 34 meter high and 100 meter long ski jump on the north end of the plaza between the King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin statutes and nail jump after jump with multiple 360 degree turns, twists and the odd flip as city buses went by. We talked about the unique venue as much as we talked about what we watching.
I think the fact that the event was held at Gwanghwamun made it all the more special. Where else in the world are you going to see this? Nowhere. People from around the world – more than 170 countries – were able to watch the Big Air contest, and even better, see the creativity and imagination of city officials at work. This will reap endless benefits for the brand Korea and its capital city, Seoul.
At the same time, and equally as important, the plaza was used exactly what it was supposed to be used for: events for the people. Sure it would have been easy – maybe too easy – for Mayor Oh to hold this event at one of our many stadiums. Instead, he decided to bring the event to the people of Korea. It was an “in your face decision” by a strong leader that will only benefit this country as a travel destination in any season, even winter.
To the detractors who called this a re-election ploy. What is the Mayor supposed to do, stop working to market this city to the world because he is running for re-election.? The work never stops. It can’t stop.
The police handled it perfectly. I did not encounter a single problem getting to the event or leaving it when it was done on Saturday night. No problem. Great job by Seoul City Police.
As a foreigner living in Seoul, I was very proud of my “host city” being able to expose my family to something they won’t soon see again: a world championship held in the heart of a world-class city.
