트랙스 1.4 터보 엔진 프로그램 매니저, 만프레드(Manfred Poepperl) 상무 인터뷰
안녕하세요? 인터뷰 전문 토비토커 선셋입니다.
오늘은 한국지엠 ULV 쉐보레 트랙스에 장착되어 많은 관심을 받고 있는 "에코텍 1.4L 가솔린 터보 엔진"의 프로그램 매니저(이하 PM)인 "만프레드(Manfred Poepperl) 상무"를 만나 우리나라 소비자분들의 궁금한 부분에 대해서 알아보는 시간을 마련했습니다.

저는 아들과 딸 두 자녀를 둔 52세의 엔지니어이며, 한국에서 Fam 0 엔진의 프로그램 매니저 역할을 하고 있는 만프레드 상무입니다.
TRAX에 탑재된 Fam 0 1.4L 가솔린 터보 엔진이 한국 소비자들에게는 생소한 엔진인데 소개를 부탁드립니다.
Korean customers are not familiar with this Fam 0 1.4L gasoline turbo engine in Trax. Can you please introduce this engine to the customers?
Fam 0 engines have been introduced in Europe in 1997 starting as naturally aspirated engines ranging from 1.0 – 1.2L displacement.
Fam 0 엔진은 1997년 유럽에 처음 도입되었으며 1.0~1.2리터 배기량의 NA (Naturally Aspirated) 엔진으로 시작되었습니다.
A 2nd generation has been introduced in 2003 including a 1.4L engine to satisfy the requirement for increased engine performance including advanced technologies for improved efficiency.
2세대 엔진은 개선된 효율을 위한 최신기술을 포함하여 증대된 엔진 성능의 요구를 만족시키기 위해 1.4L 엔진을 포함해 2003년 출시되었습니다.
Consequent refinements with focus on fuel economy led to the introduction of the 3rd generation in 2010. Variable cam phasing has been applied to the naturally aspirated engines and in addition a 1.4L turbo charged engine has been added as “top of the line” with focus on low end torque and fuel economy.
연비에 중점을 두고 개선한 결과물인 3세대 엔진이 2010년 소개되었습니다. Variable cam phasing이 북미 엔진에 적용되었고 low end torque와 연비에 중점을 둔 1.4L 터보 엔진이 최고급 라인으로 추가되었습니다.
통상적으로 터보 엔진은 일반 MPI 엔진에 비하여 어느 정도의 성능 차이가 있습니까?
In general, what is the difference between a turbo engine and a MPI engine in performance point of view?
The turbo charger is using the energy which is trapped in the exhaust gas to drive a turbine which is pumping additional air into the combustion chamber thus increasing the torque and engine output.
터보 엔진은 배출가스를 이용해 터빈을 돌려 추가적인 공기를 연소실에 넣어줘 토크와 엔진 출력을 증대시킵니다.
Turbo charging is the enabler to “down size” the engine, e.g. the Fam 0 1.4L turbocharged engine can easily replace a 1.8L ~ 2.0L naturally aspirated engine in terms of low end torque and engine output.
터보 엔진은 엔진의 다운사이징을 가능하게 합니다. 예를 들어 Fam 0 1.4L 터보 엔진은 low end 토크와 엔진 출력 면에서 1.8L ~ 2.0L 북미 엔진을 쉽게 대체할 수 있습니다.
TRAX 1.4L 터보는 유럽이나 북미에서 GM의 다른 차종에 탑재되어 판매가 되었었는데 그곳에서 어느 정도의 평가를 받았나요?
This 1.4L gasoline turbo engine has already been installed in other GM vehicles and introduced to the customers in Europe and North America. What’s the feedback from the market?
The Fam 0 1.4L turbocharged engine is a big success in Europe and North America.
1.4L 터보 엔진은 유럽과 북미에서 큰 성공을 거두고 있습니다.
Especially in the US where customers are used to drive vehicle with big naturally aspirated engines the introduction of the Fam 0 1.4L turbocharged engine in the Chevrolet Aveo and Cruze has been received very well. Many new customers have been attracted by this “tiny” engine which is delivering such an impressive low end torque combined with great fuel economy.
특히 큰 엔진이 장착된 자동차를 운전하던 미국 고객들로부터 쉐보레 아베오와 크루즈에 장착된 1.4L 터보 엔진은 큰 호응을 받았습니다. 많은 신규 고객들이 놀라운 low end 토크와 훌륭한 연비가 결합된 이 “조그마한” 엔진에 매료되었습니다.
The turbo charged Fam 0 engine has been introduced in the smaller vehicles firstly but is now also integrated in larger vehicles like the OPEL Zafira and Insignia which covers the top of the OPEL vehicle range.
Fam 0 터보 엔진은 작은 사이즈의 차량에 먼저 적용 되었고, 현재는 오펠 자동차 중 상위 모델인 오펠 자피라(OPEL Zafira) 와 인시그니아(Insignia)와 같은 더 큰 사이즈의 차량에 적용되고 있습니다.
TRAX에 디젤이 탑재되길 원하는 소비자들이 많이 있는데 그 이유는 디젤의 파워 때문으로 알고 있습니다. TRAX Fam 0 1.4 터보 가솔린 엔진으로 충분한가요?
There are many customers who want the Trax to have a diesel engine on it as it is known as more powerful. Do you think Fam 0 1.4L gasoline turbo engine is good enough in Trax?
The Fam 0 1.4L turbocharged engine is for sure “big” enough to provide a powerful driving experience combined with great fuel economy.
1.4L 터보 엔진은 훌륭한 연비와 더불어 강력한 운전 경험을 제공하기에 충분히 "큰" 엔진임이 분명합니다.
Intensive development work with regard to engine integration into the vehicle has ensured that the vehicle performance data are matching the customer expectation. Acceleration of 0-100km/h in less the 10s is ensuring fun to drive.
엔진을 차에 통합(integration) 시키는 것과 관련된 개발 업무가 집중적으로 이뤄졌고, 덕분에 차량 성능 데이터가 고객의 기대에 부응할 수 있게 되었습니다. 0-100km/h이 10초 내에 가능해 운전의 재미를 확실히 느낄 수 있습니다.
What this FAM 0 engine means to Korea?
The introduction of the Fam 0 production at the plant in Bupyeong is an additional step to align Korea in the global GM Powertrain strategy.
부평 공장에서 Fam 0 생산이 시작된 것은 한국을 글로벌 GM 파워트레인 전략과 보조를 맞추기 위한 추가 조치입니다.
Fam 0 engines are currently built in Aspern/Austria and Flint/USA. The third production site at Bupyeong is enabling GM Korea to produce local engines for all Chevrolet vehicles which are built in various Korean plants and sold globally.
Fam 0 엔진은 현재 오스트리아의 애스펀(Aspern) 공장과 미국의 플린트(Flint) 공장에서 생산되고 있습니다. 부평이 세 번째 생산 공장이 됨에 따라 한국지엠은 국내 여러 공장에서 생산해 전 세계로 수출하고 있는 모든 쉐보레 차량들에 적용되는 엔진을 현지 생산할 수 있게 되었습니다.
How do you like your life in Korea?
Life in Korea is great! So many things are different to Europe but this is what it makes so interesting. There is no day without a new experience for me.
한국에서의 생활은 매우 좋습니다! 유럽과 많은 것이 다르지만 바로 그 이유 때문에 이 곳 생활이 흥미롭습니다. 내겐 하루라도 새로운 경험없이 지나가는 날이 없습니다.
가족들과 한국에서 여행을 해 보셨다면 어디였고, 어떤 것이 좋았는지요?
Have you travelled Korea with your family? If so, where have you been and where is your favorite?
I have two favorites!
내가 가장 좋아하는 두 곳이 있습니다.
Seoul and the surrounding cities because there is so much history, exiting museums, places for outdoor activities and uncounted events and restaurants to go to.
서울과 그 주변 지역을 좋아하는데 풍부한 역사, 흥미진진한 박물관, 야외 활동을 위한 장소, 셀 수 없는 이벤트와 음식점 때문입니다.
Jeju Island. This is the place to go for a relaxing holiday in the country side and great scenery.
제주도. 이 곳은 도시에서 벗어나 느긋하게 휴가를 보내고 뛰어난 풍광을 즐길 수 있는 장소입니다.
Do you have anything to tell GM Korea customers?
The Chevy Trax is a very modern vehicle with a lot of exiting features. The Fam.0 turbo charged engine fits excellent into this concept. I would like to encourage customers to go to the dealer for a test drive to get their own driving experience. Customer reviews from the OPEL Mokka which is a derivate of the Chevrolet Trax in Europe are very good.

* Naturally Aspirated Engine
피스톤이 하강할 때 부압에 의하여 혼합 가스나 공기를 흡입하는 엔진을 말한다.
압축기로 엔진에 흡입되는 공기의 압력을 높이는 슈퍼차지드 엔진과 대조적으로 사용되는 용어이다.
* Low end torque
저속 구간의 Torque 를 말하는 것으로 일반 소비자들이 사용하는 저 RPM 구간(가솔린엔진 기준 통상 1,000 ~ 2,000 RPM 구간)의 Torque를 말합니다.
