각설하고~! 외국인이 타본 마티즈는 어떤가! 가 이번 포스팅의 주제입니다. 시승차를 굴리다가 문득 생각이 나서
한번 시도 해 봤습니다. 사실 우리나라 면허증을 가진 외국인들이 그리 많지는 않거든요.
쓸데 없는 소리 그만하고 바로 본문으로 들어 갑니다.

1. 소개 한번 해주세요.
제 이름은 Scott 입니다. 시카고 출신이며 현재 한국에서 영어강사로 재직중입니다. 한국에 온지는 2년이 좀 넘었고 대학원을 가기 전까지 계속 영어강사일을 하려 합니다.
2. 이 차 어떻게 받게 되었나요?
제 친구 XX (저임ㅋㅋ) 이 차를 두 달간 테스트할 기회를 줬습니다. 서울에 있기 때문에 시카고에 있을 때에 비하면 거의 운전을 해볼 기회가 없었습니다. 이 기회를 놓칠 수가 없었죠. 한국에서 외국인이 직접 운전을 하는 경우는 거의 없기에 완전 기뻤죠.
3. 재밌었나요?
마티즈 크리에이티브 운전은 정말 재밌었습니다. 완전 좋은 미니카에요. 제가 필요한 부분에 꼭 맞는 차였고, 저는 완벽하게 이 차를 활용했습니다. 저는 제가 일하는 학원까지 걸어 다닐 수 있는 거리에 삽니다만, 여자친구는 멀리 살아요. 차를 가져가는 게 더 좋은 옵션일 때가 있죠. 특히 버스나 지하철이 일찍 끊기니까요. 일 끝나고 마티즈 크리에이티브를 몰고 쇼핑을 하러가거나 서울에 있는 친구들을 보러 가는 건 좋은 기분 전환이 됩니다.
4. 이 차 타고 어디 가본적 있나요? 가본적이 있다면 어딜 가봤나요?
한국에 온 이후로, 여행을 많이 해보진 못했습니다. 그렇기에 마티즈 크리에이티브 덕에 여행이 가능하게 된 건 정말 긍정적인 경험이라 할 수 있겠습니다. 2,3일 일정으로 여행도 가보고 하룻밤 묵는 소풍도 가봤습니다. 1박짜리 여행에서는 제 친구들과 함께 설악산 하이킹을 하러 갔습니다. 한국의 교통체증을 피하기 위해 저녁 늦게 출발했는데요. 저는 기름을 가득 채우고 도로로 올라갔습니다. 강원도에는 몇 시간 후에 도착을 했습니다. 저는 한국어 독해는 됩니다만, 시속 90으로 달리면서 출구를 지나치면 소용이 없습니다. 결국 우리는 멋진 일출 직후에 설악산에 도착을 해서 하이킹을 시작했습니다. 산에서의 피곤한 하루를 마친 이후, 먹고 서울로 돌아갔습니다. 이번엔 차가 좀 막히더군요. 다리를 쭉 뻗고 싶어 미치는 줄 알았습니다.
강원도 여행은 제가 이 차를 끌고 다닌 여행 중 가장 큰 여행입니다. 이 여행으로 제가 느낀 건 마티즈 크리에이티브는 장거리 여행에는 그다지 적합하지 않다는 것입니다. 제가 이 차를 가장 즐길 수 있었던 순간은 역시 일상에서의 사용입니다. 이 차의 연비는 아주 좋고, 도시 주행에 적합하도록 되어 있는 것 같습니다. 서울이 세계에서 가장 큰 메트로폴리스중 하나라는 것을 생각할 때, 운전,주차 그리고 이리저리 움직이는 것은 제가 SUV나 세단을 몰고 다니는 것에 비하면 아주 쉬웠습니다. 심플한 사용이 가장 좋았던 것 같아요. 마티즈 크리에이티브는 실용적인 차니까요. 플러스! 마티즈 크리에이티브는 몰기에 재미난 미니카 입니다.
5. 이 차의 어떤 점이 맘에 드나요?
제가 이 차를 받기 위해 xx (저입니다요 ~)을 봤을 때, 저는 이 차의 외관에 놀랐습니다. 마티즈 크리에이티브의 외관은 나사의 우주선 비슷한 라인과 커브로 된 랠리카 같은 느낌입니다. 스타일리쉬하달까요. 독일차 같은 느낌을 받았습니다. 인테리어야 말로 제가 깜짝 놀란 부분입니다. 밖에서 보면 마티즈 크리에이티브는 확실히 작은 차 입니다. 하지만 내부는 편하고 넓고 실용적이며 훌륭하게 디자인 되었습니다. 외관 색깔인 레드가 내부까지 멋있게 이어져 있습니다. 도어는 붉은 금속재질로 되어 있어 레이싱카 느낌이 나는 시트와 잘 어우러집니다. 솔직히 말씀드리면, 빨간색은 제가 좋아하는 색이 아닙니다. 수 많은 색깔 중, 제가 가장 덜 좋아하는 색깔 중 하나입니다. 지엠대우는 인테리어에 레드를 남용하지 않았습니다. 예. 보통 레드는 전통적으로 번쩍번쩍하는 색상입니다. 하지만 마티즈 크리에이티브의 레드는 눈에 부담을 줄만큼 과하지 않습니다. 적당합니다.
마티즈 크리에이티브는 간단히 말해 실용적입니다. 마티즈 크리에이티브를 운전할 때, 저는 빠르고 가볍게 움직인다는 느낌을 받았습니다. 4실린더 엔진은 충분한 가속을 가능하게 하고, 브레이크는 부드럽게 작동합니다. 핸들링은 제가 이 차를 좋아하는 이유 중 하나입니다. 단단하고 반응이 빠르며, 깨끗하게 돌아갑니다. 제가 차를 완전히 조종한다는 느낌입니다. 저는 마치 바느질하는 것 마냥 차 사이를 왔다 갔다 할 수 있었습니다. 벌새가 날아가는 걸 본적이 있으신가요? 제가 그 벌새 같다 라는 기분을 느꼈습니다. 마티즈 크리에이티브는 시티카 입니다. 좋은 연비를 위해 디자인 된, 좁은 주차공간을 위해 컴팩트한, 그리고 도시를 자유자재로 누비기 위한 스티어링. 마티즈 크리에이티브는 서울에 적합한 차이며, 그게 바로 이 차가 도시 드라이빙에 완벽한 이유입니다. 사실 서울 같은 도시에서 SUV나 보트 같은 세단으로 평행주차를 하거나 기름 가득 채우는 비용이 얼마인지 신경 쓰는 것을 보면 재미있기도 합니다. 마티즈 크리에이티브로는 좁은 공간에 제다이 마스터처럼 쑥 들어 갈 수 있습니다. 그러고도 공간이 남죠. 차를 시승한 몇 달 동안 제가 마티즈 크리에이티브에 기름을 가득 채운건 5번 정도입니다. 이 차는 기름 냄새만 맡고 갑니다.
6. 어떤점이 마음에 안드나요.
제가 맘에 안 드는 부분은 2가지가 있습니다. 하나는 스테레오 시스템이고 나머지 하나는 사람들이 많이 탔을 때 차가 잘 나가지 않는다는 점인데요. 음악을 아주 좋아해서 차 탈 때도 음악을 크게 틀어놓고 다닙니다. 스테레오에 관한 유일한 문제점은 스피커 입니다. 어느 정도 볼륨을 크게 하면 베이스에 소리가 묻혀버립니다. 모든 사람이 꺼낼 만한 문제는 아닙니다만 음악과 운전을 동시에 좋아하는 사람이라면 문제가 될 수도 있겠습니다. 다른 잠재고객들에겐 무시해도 좋을 요소일 수 있습니다. 스피커가 차량의 퍼포먼스를 대변하지는 않으니까요.
하지만, 저를 어느 정도 실망시킨 점은 마티즈 크리에이티브의 무게/ 힘 비율입니다. 차에 사람을 몇 명 태우면 차량의 움직임이 눈에 띄게 굼떠집니다. 그렇습니다. 마티즈 크리에이티브는 도시용 차량입니다. 하지만 고속도로 주행은 어느 차든 피해갈 수 없습니다. 한국의 운전자들은 참을성이 많지도 않고 제한 속도를 잘 지키지도 않습니다. 저 역시 고속도로에서 몇 번인가 “느린 놈”이 되어버린 적이 있습니다. 저는 그저 편한 속도로 다른 차량들과 맞춰 가려는 것이었는데 말이죠. 좀 짜증나는 일이기도 합니다. 모든 일엔 양면이 있듯이, 뒤집어 말하면 혼자 타거나 한 명 정도 태우면 엔진은 빠르게 반응한다는 뜻이기도 합니다.
7. 미국에서 경차가 잘 팔리나요. 미국시장은 어떻습니까.
제 생각엔 미국 시장에서의 경차는 부침이 있는 것 같습니다. 어떤 해에는 잘 팔리기도 하고 어떤 해에는 안 팔리기도 합니다. 이건 아마 휘발유 가격과 트렌드에 좌우 되는 것 같습니다. 좋은 면을 보자면, 최근 저는 점점 더 많은 사람들이 더 작고 연비 좋은 차들을 구매하려는 것을 경향이 있다고 느낍니다. 제 생각엔 미국인들도 드디어 정신차리고 환경을 신경쓰기 시작하는 것 같습니다. 설교하려는 것은 아니지만, 지구는 하나입니다. 망치면 대안은 없습니다. 우주는 인류 없이 돌아가겠죠. 그것이 제가 미국인들이 깨달았으면 하는 것 중 하나입니다. SUV에 대한 사랑은 더 이상 지속 가능하지 않고, 미국인들이 이점을 이해하기 시작하면 좋겠습니다.
미국은 거대한 나라입니다. 미국, 시카고 LA 같은 도시 사이는 수백 마일의 시골길입니다. 사실 경차는 시골 사람뿐만이 아니라 도시 근교 사람들도 그다지 원하지 않는 차입니다. 저 역시 미니카로 위험한 미국 고속도로를 달려보고 싶진 않습니다. 하지만 도심지역에서는 작은 차들이 좀 팔립니다. 시카고에서 제 이모도 미니쿠퍼를 샀고 여동생은 혼다 시빅을 몹니다. 이런 타입의 차들은 환경의 영향으로 잘 팔립니다. 제가 만약에 도심지역에 산다면, 저는 무조건 경차를 살 겁니다. 여러 측면을 고려해도 그게 정답입니다.과거의 미국에서는 경차에 관한 부정적인 인식들이 많았습니다만 요즘은 드디어 그런 어두운 역사를 극복하는 듯 보입니다. 포드 핀토스가 터져버렸다거나 폭스바겐 비틀이 소형트럭 두 대에 끼어 납작하게 되었다거나 하는 이야기들을 들어본 적이 있으시죠? 이런 고정관념들과 잘못된 인식들은 사실 극복하기 상당히 어렵습니다. 게다가 소비자들은 멋있고 격이 있으며 스포티한 차를 원합니다. 오늘날 많은 자동차 회사들은 멋지지만 여전히 저렴한 미니카를 잘 만들어내고 있습니다.
8. 한국의 자동차 문화에 대해 어떻게 생각하나요? 서울에서 운전하기 어렵나요?
저는 한국의 자동차 문화가 제대로 가고 있다고 생각합니다. 몇 년 전만해도, 저는 한국의 자동차 산업에 대해 부정적인 인식을 갖고 있었습니다만 최근 10년간 지엠대우나 현대 같은 회사들은 그들의 경쟁자에 비해 좋은 차를 만들어 왔습니다. 자동차만이 아니라, 한국제품의 전반적인 품질이 최근 몇 년간 놀랍게 상승했습니다. 솔직히, 제가 미국으로 돌아가면, 제가 무엇을 사던 간에 한국제품부터 볼 것 같습니다.
한국 자동차 문화에 관해 한 마디 하겠습니다. 하지만 이건 오히려 소비자에 관한 이야기라고 할 수 있겠군요. 제발 검은색, 회색, 흰색 이 세 가지 색깔을 피해주세요. 다양한 색깔이 좋지 않을까요. 검은색, 회색, 흰색 차량들만 가득한 곳을 운전을 하면 때때로 우울해집니다.
한국에서의 운전이 어렵다고 생각하지는 않았습니다. 차선도 잘 그려져 있고, 표지판도 영어로 잘 되어 있으며 가로등도 밝혀져 있습니다. 한국어를 어느 정도 한다는 사실도 조금 도움이 되었네요. 서울 같은 도시에서 마티즈로 달리는 것은 나쁘지 않았습니다. 사실 저 역시 큰 도시에서 왔다는 점을 생각하면 어려운 점은 없었습니다. 하지만 한국인 운전자들에 관한 건 또 다른 이야기 입니다. 저는 진심으로 “빨리빨리” 문화가 한국 도로에서 사라졌으면 합니다. 그리고 도로에서 조금의 배려가 필요한 것 같습니다. 빵빵 소리도 당해보고 소리 지르는 사람도 있었습니다. 버스나 다른 차들이 제 앞에 불쑥 끼어든 적도 있었습니다. 하지만 그 사람들이 제가 외국인이라는 것을 알면 보통은 미소와 함께 손을 흔들어줍니다. 안심이 되죠. 한가지 덧붙이자면, 운전중에 네비로 티비를 보는 건 좋지 않은 것 같습니다.
1. Tell us about yourself.
My name is Scott Lesniak. I'm originally from Chicago and currently teaching overseas in South Korea. I've been on the ROK for a little over two years and planning teaching until I'm ready to go back to grad school in the States.
2. How did you get this car?
A friend of mine, Sangyun Lee, offered me the opportunity to test drive a GM Daewoo for a few months. Since living in South Korean I've barely driven at all compared to being back in Chicago, so I couldn't pass up the chance to do so. I was ecstatic to try it out because so few foreigners like myself actually have the opportunity to drive in South Korea.
3. Did you enjoy driving this car?
I loved driving the Matiz Groove! It's a great little car. It fit my needs and I utilized it perfectly on a weekly basis. I live walking distance from my place of employment, but driving distance from my girlfriend and areas where taking a car is just a better option, especially since the subways and buses end early. Taking the Matiz out after work for a few hours to do some shopping or to see some friends in Seoul was a great escape from what I was use to doing without a car.
4. Did you do a bit of travel with this car at all? If you did, where did you go?
Since I came to Korea, I haven't traveled too much within the country, so being able to use the Matiz for sightseeing was really positive experience. I traveled on a few day trips for some sightseeing and one overnight excursion. On my overnight trip, my friends and I decided to do a bit of hiking on Seoraksan (설악산) in Gangwon-do (강원도). The three of us headed out late in the evening to beat the notorious traffic on Korean highways. I filled the tank up and we hit the road. The roads we clear (or clear enough for the hour) and we arrived in Gangwon-do in a few hours with minimal time spent checking and rechecking the GPS. I can read Korean, but my comprehension skills greatly diminish at 90 KPH while speeding past exits. Eventually we got to Seoraksan after a gorgeous sunrise and started a full day of hiking. After an exhausting day on the mountain, we ate, and decided to head back to Seoul. This time around, we weren't so lucky with the traffic. Let's just say I couldn't wait to stretch my legs after that trip.
The Gangwon-do trip was the only major trip I took with the car and soon realized that this car is not designed for long haul trips. What I appreciated and enjoyed the most about the Matiz was my day-to-day use of the car. The car has incredible fuel efficiency and is tailored towards city driving. With Seoul being one of the biggest metropolises on the planet, driving, parking, and maneuvering was a breeze compared to my SUV and sedan counterparts I would see on the road with me. Like I said, the simple uses were the most rewarding because of the practicality of the Matiz. Plus, it's a fun little car to drive!
5. What do you like about this car?
When I met Sangyun for the handover of the car, I was pleasantly surprised by the look of the Groove. The exterior of my Barcelona Red Matiz Groove resembles a rally car with the lines and curves harking towards the NASA's space shuttle. Its look is sleek and stylish; almost like a German inspired auto. The interior of the Groove was where I was really blown away by its design. From the outside, the Groove looks and actually is a small car. However, the interior is spacious, comfortable, practical, and well-designed. The Barcelona Red color tone from the outside is tastefully carried throughout the interior of the Groove as well. The doors have the red metal trim which compliments the racing inspired seats with just enough red. To be honest, red isn't my favorite color. In the whole color spectrum it is my least favorite, but Daewoo didn't overdo the amount of red in the interior. Yes, red is traditionally a flashy color for a car, but the Groove's design isn't like a red overload on the eyes. It is just enough.
The Matiz is simply practical. While driving the Matiz Groove, I found it be quick and light on its feet. The 4 cylinder engine surprisingly allowed ample pickup and the braking was smooth to a stop. The handling was one thing I loved about the Groove. It's tight, responsive, and clean. I had total control over the car. I was able to weave in and out of traffic like I was threading a needle. Have you ever watched a hummingbird fly around? That's what it felt like. The Matiz is a city car. One designed for great fuel efficiency, compact size for tight spots, and a steering radius to meet a city's dimensions. The Groove fits perfectly in the city and that's what makes the perfect car for urban driving. It's quite humorous to watch people try to park or maneuver their SUV or boat-like sedan in a city like Seoul. It is almost laughable at the number of attempts my fellow drivers make for a parallel parking spot or how much their petrol fill-up costs. With the Groove, I am able to squeeze and back into spots with space to spare like a Jedi master. Over the course of a few months, I've only filled up the Matiz 5 times or so. The thing just sips petrol.
6. What do you not like about this car?
There were two things that I simply did not like. One being the stock stereo system and the other being the engine with added weight in the car. Being a music snob and liking my music loud while driving, my only problem with the stereo was the stock speaker installed in the Groove. After a certain volume level, the speakers become muffled with bass. Not an overall serious concern, but for someone that loves music and driving the music quality did become a nuisance. For other potential buyers though, my gripe about speaker quality would be negligible. Speakers do not effect the overall performance of a car.
However, the one thing that did concern me was the weight to power ratio of the Matiz. With a few occupants in the car, the Matiz become noticeably sluggish. Yes, it is a city car, but driving on a highway is expected with any car one purchases. Korean drivers are not very patient nor do they conservatively follow the speed limits posted. I found myself in a few situations being the slow guy on the highway while trying to match the other drivers at a comfortable speed. It was a bit nerve racking. On the flip side of things, while driving alone or with one other occupant, the engine is quick and responsive.
7. Do mini cars like this sell good in the states? What's the U.S market like?
I think the States have had an on and off relationship with mini cars. They do well during certain years or poorly during other. This is perhaps due to oil prices and current trends. On the plus side, I have noticed more and more people, friends or otherwise, opting to buy smaller, more fuel efficient cars in recent years. I think people in America are starting to wake up and become environmentally concerned. This may be myself preaching, but this is the only world we have. If we ruin it, that's the end of life as we know we and the universe will go on without us. That's what I hope people in America are beginning to realize. The SUV love affair is not sustainable and Americans are beginning to understand this, I hope.
America is a huge country with hundreds of miles of country between urban centers such as New York, Chicago, and LA. Mini cars are not what people want in the country or even in the suburbs at the moment. Personally, I would not want to drive around a mini car in the country do the shear danger of America freeway speeds and lack of a powerful engine. The SUV love affair wages on, I suppose. However, in urban centers, mini cars and smaller cars do sell well. In Chicago, my aunt has a Mini-Cooper and my sister has Honda Civic. These types of cars sell well depending on the environment. If I lived in an urban center in America, I would definitely purchase a mini car. It makes sense on so many levels.
Also, I think mini cars had a lot of negative stereotypes in the past and now they are finally overcoming their dark, unpopular history in America. We've all heard about Ford Pintos blowing up or a VW Beetle being pancaked by two semi-trucks, right? Those kinds stereotypes and misconceptions are difficult to overcome. Plus, consumers like cars that look good; a sleek, classy, or sporty look. These days a lot of car manufacturers are doing a great job making mini cars look fantastic with all the bells and whistles, and still making them affordable for the average consumer.
8. What do you think about Korea’s automotive culture? Do you find it hard to drive around Seoul? Any differences?
I admire Korea's automotive culture and think they are on the right track. Years ago, I had a lot of negative misconceptions about the industry. In the last decade or so, companies like GM Daewoo and Hyundai have made some excellent autos compared to their rivals. Koreans take a lot of pride in all of their products. It's not only cars though, the quality of Korean products in general has risen incredibly over the years. Honestly, when I go back to America, Korean products, whether it be a television or a car, will be the first I will check out before I purchase.
I will say one thing about Korean's automotive culture, but this is more geared towards the Korean consumer. Please purchase a car that does not have the color black, white or gray! Get some color! It's sometimes depressing to be driving around in a world filled with black, white, and gray cars.
I did not find it too difficult driving in Korea. The roads are clearly marked, signs are in English, and streets are well-lit. Being able to read and speak a little Korean helped me, too. The Matiz has been great to drive in a city like Seoul. Everything was pretty easy for me considering I come from a big city as well. Korean drivers on the other hand are a different story. I really wish the "bali bali go go" culture while driving would end and people would show a little more humility on the road. I've been honked at, yelled at, cut off by buses and cars alike way too much for my liking...and I'm from Chicago! However, when they see I'm a foreigner, they usually wave, smile, and laugh. That was relieving feeling. Also, people should really stop watching TV on their navigation systems while driving. That is purely reckless driving.
