우선 죄송하다는 말씀으로 시작하려 합니다. 한동안 포스팅을 올리지 못했습니다. 죄송합니다. 적어도 최근 근황에 대해서 조금씩이라도 썼어야 했습니다.
문제는, 제가 최근 해왔던 일들은 여러분께 포스팅을 통해 알려드리기가 조금은 어려운 주제들입니다. 하지만 이것은 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 저는 지난 6주 동안 아시아 곳곳을 방문했었고 지금 “엄청나게 많은 음식이 제 접시에” 놓여 있습니다.
지난주에는 이틀간 상해에서 GMIO (General Motors International Operations) 홍보팀과 상해 엑스포를 준비하는 일을 했습니다.
또한 GMIO 팀들과 상해 엑스포에 오는 기타 외국미디어를 대상으로 하는 한국에서의 프로그램을 준비하고 왔습니다. 10월엔 지엠대우는 100명이 넘는 유럽, 중동, 남아프리카 그리고 남미 기자들을 3차수에 걸쳐 초청할 계획입니다. 이들 미디어그룹들이 속한 국가들은 지엠대우 차량수출에 있어 매우 중요한 시장들입니다. 이분들은 지엠대우 디자인센터 및 생산시설을 견학하고 청라 프루빙그라운드에서 지엠대우 차량을 시승하게 됩니다. 또한 지엠대우 임원들과의 만남은 세계 각 미디어들이 지엠대우가 지엠의 글로벌 성공에 얼마나 기여하고 있는지를 알게 될 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다.
저희 이야기를 하자면, 6월의 판매량은 멋지게 올랐습니다. 첫 10일간은 아주 좋았습니다.
지난 몇 주간 많은 기자들이 제게 물어왔습니다. 지엠과 지엠대우의 산업은행과의 교섭은 어떻게 되어가고 있냐고 말이죠. 자세하게 말씀 드릴 수는 없습니다만, 지엠대우는 6월 11일 산업은행측에 종합적인 제안을 제시했습니다. 이 제안은 산은이 그간 우려했던 이슈들을 언급하고 있습니다. 합의가 이루어지지 않는 동안에도 지엠대우와 산업은행의 관련팀들은 계속 이야기를 하고 있으며, 제 생각에는 긍정적인 방향으로 가고 있는 것 같습니다. 저는 곧 이 문제가 해결되리라 긍정적으로 보고 있습니다. 지금으로써는 이 이상 말씀 드릴 수가 없네요.
제가 두 번째로 많이 들은 질문에 답하자면 (기자들이나 기타 손님들로부터), 네, 저는 한국팀이 16강에 진출하여 매우 기쁩니다. 아니요. 저는 그렇게 잘 할 것이라 기대하지 못했습니다. 네. 저는 내일 경기를 볼 것입니다. 그리고, 마지막으로 네, 저는 한국을 강하게 응원할 겁니다.

Where have you been?
To start with - a huge apology. I have not blogged for a long time and for this I am sorry. I should have at least provided you with a brief update on what I have been doing.
The problem is that what I have been working on are not subjects that I can talk about or blog about. But, I can tell you that I have been in Asia for the past six weeks and I have a lot “on my plate right now.”
Spent two days last week in Shanghai working with the General Motors International Operations (GMIO) Communications team on the Shanghai Expo.
Also, spent time on working with GMIO on setting up a Korea program for international visitors to the Shanghai Expo. In October, GM Daewoo will host about three waves of more than 100 media from Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and South America. All of these media are from key export markets for GM Daewoo and in addition to our design center, tours of our production facilities, ride and drive at Cheong-na Proving Grounds, they will have a chance to speak with executives and learn more about GM Daewoo and how we are contributing every day to GM’s global success.
Closer to home…June sales are shaping up nicely. We had a very strong first 10 days of the month.
Many media have also asked me over the past week just where GM and GM Daewoo “are” with our negotiations with the KDB. I can’t go into details, but GM and GM Daewoo provided the KDB with a comprehensive proposal on June 11th that addressed many of the issues of concern echoed by the KDB. While there is no agreement – yet – our working teams are still speaking with each other and I think, moving in a positive direction. I remain optimistic that this issue can be settled soon. That’s all I can say about this right now.
One final thought…to answer the second most asked question of me this week by media and guests: yes, I am thrilled that Korea made it to the second round of the FIFA World Cup. No, I did not expect them to perform as well as they have. Yes, I will be watching the game tomorrow night, and yes, I will be strongly supporting Korea.
