저는 오늘 여러분과 GM의 리더십 변화에 대한 소식을 공유하고자 합니다. GM의 회장 겸 CEO인 에드워드 휘태커가 오는 9월 1일부로 CEO직에서 사임하게 될 것이며, 회장직은 2010년 말까지 수행할 것입니다. 휘태커 회장은 GM의 역사상 가장 도전적인 시기에 부임하여 회사의 수익성을 회복하고 성공적인 토대를 다져나가는 데 탁월한 공헌을 하였습니다.
이번 휘태커 회장의 사임 소식은 GM의 2분기 실적 발표 직후 전해진 것으로, GM은 지난 2007년 이후 잇따른 손실을 기록한 이래 올해 처음으로 2분기 연속 수익을 달성했습니다. 이는 GM의 전 직원이 자부심을 가질 만한 성과입니다.

Dear GM Daewoo Colleagues,
Last night we learned that Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. will step down as General Motors CEO on September 1, and as Chairman of the Board by the end of the year, having successfully led the company’s return to profitability after the most turbulent period in its history.
Mr. Whitacre’s announcement followed the news that GM reported its second consecutive quarter of profits after a string of losses dating back to 2007. We should all be very proud of this accomplishment.
Dan Akerson, 61, who has served on the GM Board of Directors since July 2009, will become CEO on September 1 and Chairman by the end of the year, ensuring a smooth transition and continued positive momentum for company.
It was never the plan for Ed Whitacre to be the long-term CEO and Chairman. He made this clear from the beginning and the Board understood this.
Despite more work to be done, the timing is right given the foundation is in place for GM’s long term success as evidenced by today’s financial results. The team that is generating the great results for GM is intact and energized about the future.
Dan Akerson is a great choice given his broad global business experience, decisive leadership style and familiarity with the company and its leadership team.
There have been many leadership changes at GM in the recent months. But our strategic direction remains clear. We will design, build and sell the world's best vehicles. We have great leadership depth and capability and we will continue along our path to recovery - as demonstrated by the great financial results we announced yesterday.
Here in Korea, we are gaining momentum every day and it is our job to remain focused and continue to increase domestic sales and exports to increase profitability, which will lead to job security and future investments in Korea.
