외국인이 말하는 쉐보레 올란도
우선 제 소개를 먼저 할게요.
제 이름은 브라이언 입니다. 캐나다 노바 스코샤 출신이죠. 올해로 서른이고 (80년생) 한국에는 4년 정도 있었습니다.
현재 한국외대에서 영어를 가르치고 있습니다.
16살에 처음 운전대를 잡은 이래, 많은 차들을 타봤습니다. 저에겐 운전은 취미라고 할 수 있습니다.
제가 즐겨 하는 것 들 중 하나죠.
핸들을 잡는 다는 것은 자유, 힘 그리고 익사이팅한 무언가를 느끼게 합니다. 매일매일 이어지는 일상에서의 탈출의 의미도 있지요. 이 글은 한국지엠 차량에 관한 저의 두 번째 리뷰입니다.
쉐보레 올란도와 함께한 제 경험을 이야기 하겠습니다.
첫인상
이 차가 밴과 SUV 사이의 크로스 오버 차량이라고 알고 있었습니다. 당연히 기름을 많이 먹는 큰 차 일거라 기대했지요
실제로 보니, 보통의 SUV보다 크진 않아서 안심이 되었습니다. 큰 차를 서울이나 다른 도시에서 운전하는 거나 주차 하는 것은 생각보다 어려울 수 있습니다. 올란도는 격과 스타일 그리고 실용성을 어필하는 디자인입니다.
이 차는 다른 SUV 들 보다 낮아서 힘이 부족해 보였습니다. 하지만 이 것이 사실이 아니라는 것은 아래의 On the road 부분을 보시면 알게 될 겁니다.
올란도에 탑승할 때는 키를 꽂을 필요가 없습니다. 차에서 타거나 내릴 때 시스템이 키를 인식하여 주머니에서 키를 뺄 필요가 없다는 것은 아주 편리한 기능입니다.
다음으로는 인테리어 입니다. 실내공간은 넉넉하지만 너무 크지는 않습니다. 7개의 좌석 중 가장 뒤쪽에 있는 두 좌석은 접어서 트렁크로 쓰거나 세워서 어린이들을 앉힐 수가 있습니다. 어른이 타기엔 다소 좁아 보이지만 필요하다면 써야겠지요.
2열의 좌석은 아이들 세 명을 태우거나 어른 두 명을 편하게 태울 수 있습니다.

운전석과 조수석앞 센터페시아 디자인은 매우 스타일리쉬하며 사용자 편의적입니다.
시크릿큐브 뒤쪽의 USB 삽입공간이라던가 자동 선루프 그리고 스티어링휠에 장착된 스테레오 컨트롤 시스템 등 편리한 기능으로 가득합니다. 자동 와이퍼와 오토라이팅 기능도 들 수 있겠네요. 밴이나 SUV에 달려있기엔 꽤나 럭셔리한 아이템인 것 같아요.
이 차를 운전하고 싶어 견딜 수가 없었습니다. 바로 차에 뛰어올라 시동을 켰죠.
하지만… 어떻게 시동을 걸지?
스마트키는 여전히 주머니에 둔 채로 브레이크에 발을 올리고 시동을 누릅니다. 또 다른 멋진 기능이죠.
도로로 나가니 차의 좋은 느낌이 전해져 옵니다. 편안하고 타이트한 코너링에 브레이크 역시 쉽게 잡힙니다.
첫 사거리에서 멈추고 잠시 아이들링을 해봅니다.
조용한 가운데, 차 엔진소리가 약간 큰 것 같은 생각이 들었습니다만 곧 이 차의 엔진은 디젤이라는 것을 깨닫죠.
엔진이 너무 부드럽고 조용해서 시동을 걸 때나 주행 시 이차가 디젤이라는 것을 잊게 됩니다.
고속도로로 진입합니다. 이 차를 시험해보고 싶어집니다.
가속은 아무런 어려움 없이 이뤄집니다. 추월 역시 쉽게 할 수가 있죠. 가속 패달을 밟으면 힘을 느낄 수가 있습니다. 경사를 올라 갈 때도 그 추진력을 잃지 않습니다. 하지만 내리막에서는 이러한 이유로 속도에 주의해야 합니다.
너무 빨리 가서는 곤란하죠. 여기저기 숨어 있는 카메라와 이 차의 가속성능 덕에 이 차를 컨트롤 하는 건
시승 전 가장 큰 걱정 중 하나는 주차였습니다. 내가 과연 주차를 할 수 있을까? 너무 크지 않을까? 주차 공간이 모자라지는 않을까? 아니면 공간을 너무 많이 차지해서 주차 중에 문에 들이 받진 않을까? 등등의 고민이 있었습니다.
운전을 해본 결과, (대부분은 이마트나 지하 주차장 등이었습니다) 저는 걱정할 필요가 없다는 것을 깨달았지요. 만약 여러분이 쉐보레 스파크보다 큰 차를 몰아본 경험이 있다면, 이 정도 크기의 차를 운전하고 주차하는데 크게 불편함을 느끼지 않을 겁니다.
또 다른 걱정은 기름값이었습니다. 디젤 가격이 휘발유 바로 아래라, 돈이 좀 들 것이라 생각했습니다. 시승의 대부분은 시내 주행이었고 고속도로도 약간 있었습니다.
평균 연비는 리터당 10.5km 정도 나온 것 같습니다. 이 정도 크기의 차면 나쁘지 않은 결과입니다. 하지만 연료탱크가 커서 완전히 채우는데 11만 5천원 정도 듭니다. 대신 한번 가득 채우면 먼 길을 갈 수가 있죠.
저는 이런 스타일의 차는 불편할 것이라고 늘 생각해왔습니다만 제 예상은 또 틀렸습니다. 특히 앞 좌석은 운전자를 배려하는 다른 차들과 전혀 다르지 않습니다. 앞쪽은 공간도 넉넉합니다. 처음엔 약간 딱딱한 듯 느껴지지만 금새 적응이 됩니다. 시트의 조절 기능도 훌륭합니다. 심지어 위 아래로도 움직일 수가 있습니다. 만약 여러분이 평균보다 약간 작더라도, 목을 내뺄 필요 없이 시야의 확보가 가능합니다. 스티어링휠에 장착된 여러 버튼 들이나, 자동 라이팅, 레인 센서, 열선시트 등은 훌륭한 주행 경험을 선사 합니다.
전체적으로 말씀 드리자면, 여러분이 위에서 보셨다시피 저는 이 차에 아주 만족합니다. 입에 발린 소리를 하려는 건 아닙니다. 정말로 멋진 경험이었습니다. 제가 만약 가족이 있고 넉넉한 공간의 차가 필요하다면 이 차야 말로 이상적인 차겠습니다. 올란도는 편안함, 힘, 공간 그리고 스타일을 모두 제공합니다. 더 이상 뭐가 필요할까요.
First, allow me to introduce myself;
My name is Brian and I’m from Nova Scotia, Canada. I’m 30 years old and I’ve been living in Korea for 4 years. I’m a Full-Time Lecturer at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies teaching adult students and I fully enjoy living in Korea. To be totally honest, the experience of driving in Korea has enhanced my enjoyment that much more in the fact that I can come and go whenever I want and getting to places outside of the city is much more convenient.
I first started driving when I was just 16 years old and have experience driving various automobiles from all different manufacturers, shapes, sizes and styles. For me driving can be a hobby, it’s something that I really enjoy doing. For me getting behind the wheel has a feeling of freedom, power and excitement, as well it is an enhancement on my everyday life. This is now my second review for General Motors in Korea.
That being said; let me tell you about my experience with the Chevrolet Orlando.
First impression:
I knew that this car was a new type of cross-over between a van and an SUV so I was expecting a huge gas guzzler of a car.
In actuality, at first glance it didn’t look bigger than most SUV’s so I was a little relieved.
Driving in Seoul and cities in Korea can be hard to park or get around in something that is too big.
It has a design that promotes; class, style, and utility.
However, because it was lower to the ground than most SUV’s, I got the impression that it may not be so powerful, however this was not the case as you will see in “On the road” below.
The car has a keyless entry, which is very handy and convenient and even more impressive is the fact that with the smart key feature, I didn’t even need to take the key out of my pocket in order to unlock or enter the vehicle.
The car system itself knows when the key is near and allows the door to be opened. So convenient! Next, the interior is quite spacious but not too big. There are 7 seats total. The two back ones can be laid down so that they are hidden to give you trunk space or left up to fit two youngsters. I don’t believe it would be very pleasant for adults to sit in the two back seats, although it could do if the situation was a necessity.
The three middle or back seats could fit three teenagers/children or two adults comfortably (three adults might be a little too tight).
The design in the front for the driver and passenger is very user friendly and stylish. There are many wonderful features such as the hidden USB behind the middle dashboard, the automatic sunroof, and controlling the stereo from the steering wheel.
Other nice features are the automatic wipers and the automatic lights. For a van/SUV this car sure does have some nice luxury items!
On the road:
I couldn’t wait to get this baby on the road, so I quickly hopped in and went to turn on the car.
But… How do I turn it on? With the ‘smart key’ (still in my pocket) I just put my foot on the brake and push the ignition button, another wonderful convenient feature. I started off down the road and the car felt great. It’s a very smooth ride, handles great, cornering is tight, and brakes easily and quickly in case of emergency stops (bumper to bumper traffic). At the first intersection, I was idling for a little bit.
As I sat there in the silence, I realized I could hear the engine running a little louder than normal.
Then I came to realize, “oh yeah, this is a diesel engine!” The engine was so smooth and quiet while starting and driving that I didn’t even realize that it was a diesel engine!
When I pulled out onto the highway, I really wanted to test this baby out, so I decided to pull out and pass a car, so I gave myself plenty of space, signaled and pulled out.
It accelerated without a problem and passing was a cinch. I could actually feel the power when stepping down on the accelerator.
Even going uphill, you don’t lose much momentum. On the downside, because of this, you really need to watch your speed and make sure you’re not going too fast!
I must admit that with all of the hidden cameras and the easy acceleration, this was not always easy for me to control. A great ride!
Parking:
One of my major concerns before test driving this vehicle was the parking. Can I park it? Will it be too big? Will my front bumper stick out too far in the parking lot? Or will car doors collide while parked because I am taking up too much space? Well, once I drove to a few spots and parked the car (mostly e-marts, underground parking, and some places in the country), I realized that I need not worry anymore. If you have driven anything larger than a ‘Chevrolet Spark’ before, then you will feel totally comfortable with the size of driving around in this car and parking.
Fuel:
Another concern of mine was the cost of fuel. Diesel is just under the price of regular gas these days, so I knew I wasn’t going to save much money. I mostly drove through the city and a little on the highways. I believe my average gas mileage was around 10.5km/liter. Not too bad for this size car. However the size of the tank is large and it will cost about 115,000won to fill up. However, you can go a long way before needing to fill up.
Comfort:
For some reason I’ve always expected this style of car to be uncomfortable. Again, I was wrong. Especially in the front seats, this car is designed like any other car, to please the driver, and the front has lots of room and nice seats. The seats felt a little hard at first but I soon got used to it. I believe that this is standard seating and that over time, they will break in to your preference. You can also change your seats in many ways, even up and down. So, if you are a little shorter than average, you can still see clearly out of the windshield without stretching your neck. The added controls on the steering wheel, the automatic lights and wipers, the heated seats, good cooling system all made for a wonderful driving experience and I felt very comfortable and safe driving this car.
In closing;
Overall I was extremely satisfied with this car, as you can tell from my review above. I’m not trying to sugar coat anything. It really was a wonderful experience. If I were to find myself in a situation with a family and kids running around or if I simply just need the space, then this car would be ideal. It has comfort, power, space, and style. What more can you ask for?
