GM 사장 겸 CEO 프리츠 헨더슨 (GM President & CEO Fritz Henderson)
오늘 아침 저희는 모두 다음과 같은 소식에 눈을 떴습니다. 오늘 디트로이트에서 열린 월간 회의에서 제네럴모터스 이사회가 프리츠 헨더슨 사장 겸 CEO의 퇴직을 승인했다는 소식이었지요.
많은 분들이 퇴직 이유를 묻고 있습니다.
저는 GM 이사회의 일원은 아니지만, 저의 직감으로는 GM이 이사회가 원하는 만큼 빨리 변화하고 있지 않다는 것입니다. 헨더슨 CEO는 유례없는 변화와 도전의 시기에 회사를 이끌며 뛰어난 업무를 수행한 것이 사실입니다. 그러나 지난 몇 달에 걸친 변화에도 불구하고 매우 의욕적인 이사회에서 볼 때 GM의 변화는 충분히 빠르지 않았다는 것입니다. 따라서 이사회는 자신들에게 부여된 일을 한 것입니다. 즉, 변화를 만드는 것이죠. 아주 큰 변화.
그럼 우리에게 남겨진 것은 무엇일까요?
이사회가 새 사장 겸 CEO를 전세계적으로 물색하는 한편 경영은 정상적으로 진행될 것입니다. 또한 에드워드 휘태커 회장은 회장 겸 CEO로서 GM의 변화에 총력을 기울일 것 입니다.
지엠대우 역시 마찬가지 입니다. 지엠대우는 새 사장 겸 CEO로 마이크 아카몬 을 맞이하였으며 (말씀 드리지만) 그는 변화를 대표하는 분입니다. GM 이사회와 같이 마이크 아카몬 사장은 느긋하지 않습니다. 오늘 아침 헨더슨 CEO 의 퇴직 승인과 함께 GM이 새 리더를 물색하고 있다고 얘기될 때 아카몬 사장은 지엠대우 직원들에게 각자의 업무에 집중하고 할 수 있는 일들에 전념해주길 당부하셨습니다. 마지막으로 직원 모두가 하나의 조직으로서 모든 일을 신속하게 대응해주길 당부하셨습니다.
고객과 제품에 대한 집중, 위험에 대한 감수 그리고 신속함과 책임감은 GM과 지엠대우 모두를 성공으로 이끌 것 입니다.

저는 오늘 여러분과 GM 사장 겸 CEO 프리츠 헨더슨이 사임하였다는 소식을 공유하고자 합니다. 이에 따라, 에드워드 휘태커 GM 회장이 임시 회장 겸 CEO로서 역할을 수행하게 되며, 프리츠 헨더슨의 뒤를 이을 후임자는 현재 물색 중에 있습니다.
프리츠 헨더슨은 New GM 이 성공적으로 사업을 수행할 수 있도록 견고한 기반을 세웠으며, 또한 북미를 포함하여 전세계에서 더욱 성장할 수 있도록 헌신적으로 노력해 왔습니다.
하지만 프리츠 헨더슨과 이사회의 구성원들은 GM의 장기적 성공에 있어서 필요한 변화들을 이끌어내기 위해서는 경영진의 교체가 필요하다고 판단하였습니다. 많은 직원들이 이번 프리츠 헨더슨의 사임에 관해 여러가지 생각들을 가지고 있을 것입니다. 하지만 가장 중요한 점은 우리 모두는 GM이 앞으로 나아가기 위해 항상 최선을 다해야 할 의무를 가지고 있다는 것입니다.
우리는 주어진 업무를 수행하는 데 집중해야 합니다. 또한 각자 담당하고 있는 업무에 대해 강한 책임감을 가져야 하며, 특히 지금은 과거 그 어느 시기보다도 전 직원 모두가 한 팀으로 뭉쳐야 할 때입니다. GM의 지엠대우에 대한 투자 확대는, 지엠대우가 GM의 글로벌 사업에 있어서 더욱 핵심적인 역할을 수행할 것이라는 것을 의미합니다.

프리츠 헨더슨 GM CEO 사임에 대한 에드워드 휘태커 GM회장 공식 발표문 (2009.12.2)
12월 1일(미국 현지시각), General Motors(이하 GM) 이사회는 프리츠 헨더슨(Fritz Henderson) GM 사장 겸 CEO의 퇴직을 승인했습니다.
헨더슨 CEO는 유례없는 변화와 도전의 시기에 회사를 이끌며 뛰어난 성과를 냈으며, 지난 몇 개월 간 새 회사의 성장기반을 다지는 과정에서 변화가 필요하다는 데에 모두가 동의했습니다.
이에 따라, GM은 새 사장 겸 CEO를 전세계적으로 물색하는 한편, 에드워드 휘태커 GM 회장(이하 저)이 회장 겸 CEO로서 역할을 수행하게 됩니다. 저는 앞으로 새로운 역할을 맡아 르네상스 센터에서 근무하게 될 것이며, 회사 경영진이 모두 힘을 모아 당면한 과제를 해결해 나갈 것입니다.
우선 모든 직원, 딜러, 협력업체, 노동조합, 그리고 무엇보다 우리 고객 여러분들께 GM은 평상시 대로 정상적인 경영활동을 지속해 나갈 것임을 분명히 말씀 드립니다.
저는 우리 회사가 정상적인 방향으로 운영되고 있고, 또한 선도적 위치에서 앞으로도 지속적으로 최고의 품질과 가치를 지닌 차량을 개발, 생산해 고객분들께 제공해 드릴 것을 확신 드립니다. 아울러 현재 수익성 회복을 비롯, 미국과 캐나다 정부로부터 받은 재정 지원을 가능한 빠른 시일 내로 상환한다는 목표를 이루기 위해 빠른 속도로 전진해 나갈 필요가 있습니다.
마지막으로 다시 한 번 프리츠 헨더슨 전임 CEO가 보여준 리더십과 훌륭한 업적에 깊은 감사를 드리며, 또한 그가 회사에 높이 기여한 부분에 대해서도 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 아울러 GM이 역사의 새로운 출발점에 선 이 시점에 모든 GM 팀과 함께 일하게 돼 무척 기대감이 큽니다.
GM President & CEO Resigns
In Korea, we all woke up this morning to this news: At its monthly meeting in Detroit today, the General Motors Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Fritz Henderson as Director, President and CEO of the company.
Many of you have asked me why.
I am not on the GM Board of Directors, but my “gut instinct” is that GM was not changing fast enough for the Board. There is no doubt that Fritz has done a remarkable job in leading the company through an unprecedented period of challenge and change. While momentum has been building over the past several months, it appears that GM was not changing fast enough or moving quickly enough for this very active Board. So, the Board did what it is empowered to do: it made a change – a big change.
So where does this leave us?
While the Board of Directors is embarking on a global search for a new president and CEO, business will operate normally. At the same time, it would be naïve not to expect interim Chairman & CEO Ed Whitacre to accelerate the change at GM.
You can expect the same at GM Daewoo. We have a new President and CEO, and trust me; he is an agent of change. Like the GM Board of Directors, President Arcamone is not patient. We talked about Fritz’s resignation this morning and during this time when GM is looking for a new leader, President Arcamone wants GM Daewoo employees to remain focused on their jobs, to concentrate on what they can control and ignore what they cannot and finally, he wants us, as an organization to become faster in our approach to almost everything.
Customer and product focus, risk-taking, speed and accountability will drive both GM and GM Daewoo to success.

Dear GM Daewoo Employees,
As you may have heard, GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson has resigned. Chairman Ed Whitacre will serve as interim chairman and CEO while a global search takes place for Fritz’s replacement.
Fritz has done a great job getting the new General Motors Company off the ground and back to a position of growth in North America and globally.
Nevertheless he and the Board decided it was necessary to have a change in the leadership in order to achieve what the Board is looking for and expecting.
While many of us have personal emotions about this event, we have an obligation to the organization to carry on to do the very best job we can.
We must remain focused on doing the job in hand. We all know what we are responsible to deliver and now, more than at any time, we need to pull together as a team. This is important now more than ever. With the increased investment of GM in GM Daewoo, this organization is absolutely critical to the global success of GM.
People should not fear for their jobs but concentrate on returning GM and GM Daewoo to success with customers through great products and service and through efficient and effective resources. We are all individually accountable for the performance of GM Daewoo and GM. Fritz has left us with a chance and we owe it to him to deliver.

GM STATEMENT ATTRIBUTED TO CHAIRMAN ED WHITACRE:
At its monthly meeting in Detroit today, the General Motors Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Fritz Henderson as Director, President and CEO of the company.
Fritz has done a remarkable job in leading the company through an unprecedented period of challenge and change. While momentum has been building over the past several months, all involved agree that changes needed to be made. To this end, I have taken over the role of Chairman and CEO while an international search for a new president and CEO begins immediately. With these new duties, I will begin working in the Renaissance Center headquarters on a daily basis.
The leadership team – many who are with me today – are united and committed to the task at hand.
I want to assure all of our employees, dealers, suppliers, union partners and most of all, our customers, that GM’s daily business operations will continue as normal. I remain more convinced than ever that our company is on the right path and that we will continue to be a leader in offering the worldwide buying public the highest quality, highest value cars and trucks. We now need to accelerate our progress toward that goal, which will also mean a return to profitability and repaying the American and Canadian tax payers as soon as possible.
In closing, I want to once again thank Fritz Henderson for his years of leadership and service to General Motors; we’re grateful for his many contributions.
I look forward to working with the entire GM team as we now begin the next chapter of this great company.
