지엠대우 언론 송년회는 정말 마술 같은 시간이었습니다. 사실 저희는 참석해주신 기자분들을 위해 마술사를 불렀거든요. 또, OX퀴즈 게임도 하고(제가 앉은 테이블이 첫 문제를 틀려 가장 먼저 탈락을.. ㅜㅜ) 멋진 아카펠라 가수팀도 왔었답니다.
언론 송년회는 시청이 내려다보이는 서울 프라자 호텔에서 열렸습니다. 크리스마스 트리에 불이 밝혀졌다면 금상첨화였을 텐데 말입니다.
지엠대우에서는 마이크 아카몬 사장, 기술연구소 유기준 사장, 판매마케팅A/S 릭 라벨 부사장이 참석했었는데 오늘 아침 만나보니 입을 모아 정말 즐거웠다고 하셨습니다. 정말이지 모두들 기자분들과 재미있는 시간을 보냈습니다.
저 역시 블룸버그통신, 다우존스, 로이터, 이투데이, 로드앤닷컴, 중앙일보, 동아일보를 비롯해 많은 언론사에서 와주신 기자분들과 이야기하며 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다.
터놓고 말하면, 우리는 업무얘기보다 다가올 휴가 계획, 가족, 쇼핑과 크리스마스에 대해 더 많이 대화했습니다. (놀랍게도 이런 얘기를 하면 저는 확실히 힘이 솟아오르더군요)
저는 기자분들에게 간단한 인사말을 했고, 제 어린 시절 이야기도 곁들였습니다. 여러분이 함께 보실 수 있도록 제 인사말과 몇 장의 사진을 같이 올리겠습니다.

안녕하세요, 저는 지엠대우 홍보를 맡고 있는 제이쿠니 부사장입니다. 낯익은 얼굴들이 많이 보이는 것 같습니다. 이 자리에 참석해 주신데 대해 지엠대우를 대표해 감사와 환영의 말씀을 드립니다.
사실, 보다 자주 여러분과 대화하고 싶었지만, 그 동안 그러지 못했습니다. 그래서 기자 여러분을 더 효과적으로 접하고자, 많은 여러분들이 그러하듯이 저도 블로그를 시작했습니다.
저는 제 블로그를 쌍방향 커뮤니케이션의 일환으로 생각하기에, 이 곳을 통해 여러분도 제가 무엇을 생각하고 있는지, 지엠대우와 GM에 어떤 일이 벌어지고 있는지 더 잘 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 또한 한국자동차 산업에 대한 의견을 제시하고, 아름다운 나라에서 직장을 갖고 거주하는 한 외국인으로서의 제 경험을 나누고자 합니다.

오늘 저녁 만찬에서 오고 간 이야기와 사진들을 내일 제 블로그에 올리겠다고 약속 드립니다. 꼭 확인하시기를 부탁 드리며, 광고 말씀은 이로써 끝입니다.
올 한해는 지엠대우에게 있어 가장 어려웠던 한 해였다고 말씀 드리고 싶네요.
그러나 되돌아보건대, 이 힘겨운 시절이 궁극적으로는 지엠대우가 더욱 견실해지고 우리가 성공하기 위해 필요한 부분에 더욱 집중할 수 있게 할 것이라고 확신하고 있습니다.
때로 우리는 더 강해지기 위해 시련을 겪어야 하기도 합니다.
제 어렸을 적 이야기를 한가지 드려볼까 합니다.
제가 14살이었을 적에 농구팀에 있었습니다. 정말 좋은 팀이었죠. 우리 팀은 캐나다 온타리오 지역 챔피온십에서 우승했는데 이는 우리가 온타리오 최고의 농구팀이라는 증명이었죠.
그런데 우리는 한 게임에서 패배했습니다.
당시 15 게임을 치르면서 우리는 완벽한 시즌을 보내고 있었고 우리의 목표는 절대로 패배하지 않는 것이었죠. 그런데 16번째 게임에서 정말로 형편없는 팀에 지고 말았습니다.
그러나 그 시즌을 돌이켜보건대, 우리가 매 게임을 이겼더라면 우리는 결국 챔피언십을 차지하지 못했을 겁니다. 그 패배가 실제로 우리를 더 강하게 했습니다.
그 패배는 우리가 좀더 경기에 집중하게 했으며, 더 잘할 수 있게 했습니다. 우리는 더 열심히 하게 됐습니다. 그 패배로 우리는 활기를 되찾고 더 악착같이 적수를 상대했습니다. 또한 우리 자신의 능력을 과신하지 않게 했습니다. ‘겸손’이라는 큰 처방을 받은 거죠.
제 요점은 이것입니다. 지엠대우가 더 강해지려면 우리 역시 지난날의 아픔을 딛고 일어서야 한다는 것입니다. 사실 그 당시로선 유쾌하지 않았고 그리고 진짜, 장난이 아니었습니다만, 회사는 제가 2년 전 이곳에 왔을 때보다 더욱 강해져 있습니다.
저는 여러분들이 때때로 사실 그대로 모든 것을 전달하기가 쉽지 않으셨으리란 걸 알고 있습니다. 언론윤리를 굳건히 준수하고 ‘바른 소식’을 전달하기 위해 노력해주신 것에 대해 감사 드립니다.
여러분의 인내와 이해에 감사 드리며, 내년은 분명히 올해보다 더 나은 한 해가 될 것임을 확신합니다.

GM Daewoo's End of the Year Media Dinner
GM Daewoo's End of the Year Media Party was truly a magical night. Seriously, we had a magician to entertain the media. Additionally, there was game playing (my team answered the first question incorrectly and was the first team out) and a super acapella group.
It took place at the Seoul Plaza Hotel overlooking City Hall. I only wish that the Christmas tree was lit because the city looked beautiful last night - and busy. From GM Daewoo, Mike Arcamone, President & CEO, Dr. Kijoon Yu, President of Engineering and Rick LaBelle, Vice President of Sales & Marketing attended. Their feedback this morning was super. They all had a fun time and enjoyed spending time with the Korean media.
I also had a nice time talking with media friends from Bloomberg, Dow Jones, Reuters, etoday, roadn, Joong-Ang, Dong-A, and many more media outlets. It was great to see everyone in such a relaxed, happy setting. To be candid, we did a lot more talking about holiday plans, families, shopping and Christmas than we did the business (which I found incredibly refreshing).

• An-Young-Ha-Se-Yo, Jeo-Neun GM Daewoo Boo-Sa-Jang Jay Cooney Ip-Ni-Da.
• I see a lot of familiar faces in the room, and on behalf of GM Daewoo, welcome and thank you all for coming tonight.
• Truthfully, I wish I could communicate with you all more often, but it is proving to be quite difficult. So, to more effectively reach out to media, I have started to blog, just like many of you.
• I look at my blog as a form of two-way communication so you can better understand what I am thinking and what is happening at GM Daewoo and GM. I also offer up opinions on the Korean auto industry and share my experiences as a foreigner working and living in your wonderful country.
• I invite you to visit it at “blog.gmdaewoo.co.kr”. I want you to share with me your personal thoughts and opinions with me.
• I promise to post a new blog message tomorrow with pictures and thoughts from this evening’s party.

• This has without a doubt been one of our most challenging years ever.
• At the end of the day, I am completely confident that this past year will make GM Daewoo stronger and more focused on what we need to do to succeed.
• Sometimes you have to go through adversity to become stronger. Let me share a childhood story with you about what I mean by this.
• When I was 14 years old, I played on a basketball team. A very good basketball team. We won the Provincial Championship for Ontario, which meant we were the best basketball team in Ontario.
But, we had to lose to win.
• After about 15 games we had a perfect season, and our goal was to go undefeated. But we lost our 16th game to a very, very poor team.
• But as I look back, to that season, we never would have won the Championship if we won every game. You see, that loss actually made us better.
• It made us more focused, more committed. It made us work harder. It re-energized us and we devoured opponents. And, it made us much less confident in our abilities. It gave us a giant dose of humility.
• My point is this: to build a stronger GM Daewoo, we had to go through the pain of the past year. As unpleasant as it was…and believe me, it was not fun…the company is much stronger now than when I arrived two years ago..
• I know that at times, this past year, it has been difficult to keep everything straight, and I thank you for your strong commitment to journalistic ethics and trying to get the “story right”.
• Thank you for your patience and understanding, and I am certain next year will be a much better year for GM Daewoo than this year was.
