오늘 오후에 있었던 지엠대우와 산업은행간의 미팅에 관한 이야기를 들려드릴까 합니다.
오늘 지엠대우는 산업은행에서 약 40여 분 동안 회의를 가졌습니다. 오늘 미팅에는 팀 리 GM 해외 사업 부문(GM International Operations) 사장을 비롯해 마이크 아카몬 지엠대우 사장과 스티븐 스몰 지엠대우 신임 CFO가 참석했습니다.
팀 리 사장은 지난 해 12월 GM 해외 사업 부문 사장으로 취임한 이후 이번에 처음 한국을 방문하게 됐습니다. 저희는 팀 리 사장의 방한 일정에 맞춰 지엠대우의 두 번째 대주주이자 금융 파트너사인 산업은행과도 직접 인사를 나누는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했습니다.
팀 리 사장은 이번 산업은행과의 미팅뿐 아니라 방한 기간 중 30여 가지의 일정을 소화할 예정입니다.
우선, 오늘 오전 각 사업 부문 별 보고 회의를 시작으로 생산직 및 사무직 직원들과 만나 다양한 이야기를 나눴으며 산업은행과의 미팅 참석에 앞서 부평 공장의 생산 시설도 둘러봤습니다.
또한 팀 리 사장은 내일 디자인 센터를 방문해 지엠대우의 미래 제품 디자인을 둘러본 후 향후 출시될 신제품을 시승할 예정입니다. 지엠대우 여성위원회와의 미팅 및 전사 임원회의도 계획돼 있습니다. 이렇듯 팀 리 사장은 여러 일정 가운데 하나로 산업은행을 방문한 것이며 산업은행과의 미팅 때문에 방한한 것은 아닙니다.
이번 미팅에서 팀 리 사장과 아카몬 사장은 산업은행과 지엠대우의 현재와 미래 사업계획에 대해 이야기를 나눴습니다. 팀 리 사장은 이번 만남에서 산업은행 측에 지엠대우의 현금 유동성은 아주 빠르게 정상화됐다고 말했습니다.
산업은행과의 미팅 내용에 대해 회사 정책상 구체적으로 말씀 드리긴 어렵습니다. 그러나 이번 미팅이 사업 파트너로서 서로를 처음 소개하는 자리였다는 사실만큼은 분명한 것 같습니다.
이와 관련해 국내 언론에 보도된 내용 중 두 가지 사항에 대해 바로잡고자 합니다.
1) 이번 미팅은 말씀 드린 바와 같이 산업은행과 자금 지원을 재차 협의하기 위함이 아닙니다. 서로 인사를 나누고 사업 계획을 공유하기 위해 이뤄진 만남이었습니다. 그 이상도 그 이하도 아닙니다.
2) 아울러 산업은행의 요구 사항에 대한 우리의 입장은 동일합니다. 지난 해 11월 4일, 아카몬 사장은 산업은행에게 지엠과 지엠대우는 산업은행의 요구가 받아들이기 어려운 사안이기 때문에 더 이상 교섭을 진행할 계획이 없다는 입장을 분명히 한 바 있습니다. 그게 전부입니다.
이번 미팅은 짧았지만 상당히 서로에게 유익했다고 생각합니다. 그리고 무엇보다 중요한 것은 지엠대우의 현금 유동성이 매우 빠르게 안정화됐다는 사실입니다.

"KDB Meeting Today "
I just wanted to confirm a few things and clarify a few others about GM Daewoo's meeting with the KDB this afternoon (February 3).
Yes, there was a 40-minute meeting today at the KDB. It was attended by Tim Lee, President of GM International Operations, Mike Arcamone, our President & CEO and Stephen Small, GM Daewoo's new CFO.
This is President Lee's first trip to Korea since becoming the head of GMIO last December. We thought it would be a good idea for him to have an introductory meeting with KDB, which is GM Daewoo's second largest stakeholder and our financial partner.
By no means is this President Lee's only meeting this week. It's just one of more than 30 that we have scheduled for him over the next few days.
Today, he held business reviews this morning, visited with shop workers and office workers this afternoon, and toured our Bupyeong manufacturing facilities before departing for the KDB meeting late in the afternoon.
Tomorrow, President Lee will review our future designs, drive some of our future products, meet with our Women's Council and hold an All Directors' Meeting. In other words, the KDB did not bring him to Korea, but rather, was one part of a very busy three-day schedule.
As far as the KDB meeting went, President Lee and President Arcamone shared our current and future business plans with the KDB. President Lee told the KDB that GM Daewoo has quickly returned to a strong liquidity position.
As the meeting with the KDB was private, we have nothing further to publicly discuss or announce. It was simply providing both President Lee and the KDB with a "proper introduction" to one another.
The two things I'd like to correct from the media reports that I have seen so far are:
1) This certainly was not a kick off meeting to another round of negotiations. It was an introductory meeting and a business update. Nothing more. It really was that simple.
2) Regarding the KDB demands, our position has not changed. On November 4, 2009, President Arcamone told the KDB that neither GM Daewoo nor GM have any plan to continue discussing any KDB demands as we regard them as unacceptable and unnecessary. End of story.
It was a good meeting. A quick meeting. And, the bottom line is that GM Daewoo has quickly returned to a very positive, or strong liquidity position.
