당신에게 한 걸음 더 다가섭니다. 제게는 너무나 큰 한 걸음입니다.
부산에서 시승행사로 바뿐 가운데 제 아내가 전화를 했습니다. 신종플루로 아이들이 다니는 학교가 휴교가 되어 앞으로 10일간 집에서 아이들을 돌봐야 한다구요. 아, 걱정입니다.
기자단 시승행사준비로 저도 많이 지친 상태라서 휴식이 좀 필요했습니다. 매일 가던 학교를 못가고 집에만 있어야 아이들도 지루해 죽을 지경이어서 지난주 화요일 오후 휴가를 내고 가족과 함께 서울을 둘러보기로 했습니다. 광화문광장과 청계천이 저희의 목적지였습니다.
서울 중앙에 위치한 광화문 광장은 15개월간의 공사 끝에 지난 8월 1일 첫선을 보였는데요. 저처럼 차를 타고 이 지역을 통과해야만 하는 사람들에게는 짜증스러웠지만 그 결과물을 보니 서울 도심의 교통체증을 겪더라도 기다려온 가치가 있다는 생각이 들더군요.
그동안 아시아에서 세 개의 주요 도시에서 살아본 저이기에 어떤 도시 정경을 보고 “WOW”하는 일이 별로 없는데요. 광화문광장과 청계천은 정말 “와우”더군요. 완벽 그 자체입니다. 세계수준의 광장이고 서울 정부의 도시개발 프로젝트에 찬사를 보냅니다.
제가 여러분께 한국사 수업을 할 생각은 없고, 다만 제가 알고 있는 것 여러분과 간략하게 나눌까 합니다. 광장조성은 광화문의 한국사, 정치, 문화, 문화의 중심지로서의 복원을 의미하여 광화문, 경복궁, 북한산 및 북악산의 축을 연결하여 한민족의 자존심을 회복하는 의미가 있다고 합니다.
광화문 광장은 오랫동안 잊혀졌던 육조거리를 복원해 놓은 곳으로 한국의 역사를 다시금 경험하게 하는 곳입니다. 또한 보행자 중심의 공간으로 청계천과 경복궁을 잇는 가교 역할도 합니다. 광화문광장에 가는 또 하나의 이유는 끊김없이 북한산의 파노라마뷰를 만끽할 수 있기 때문이기도 합니다.
제 아이들은 분수 사이를 뛰어다니고, 물에 발을 적셔 보기도 하고, 심지어 물을 뿜어대는 분수를 향해 달려 들어 홀딱 젖기도 했답니다. 웃고 깔깔거리며 즐거운 시간이었습니다. 경복궁 앞에 서서 조선의 왕들과 조상들이 현대 서울의 또 다른 명소가 된 광화문광장을 보며 흐뭇해 하리라 믿습니다.
광화문광장을 보고 청계천 근처 베스킨라빈스에서 아이스크림을 먹으면서 옷을 말리고 휴식을 취했습니다. 제가 처음 한국으로 발령되어 왔을 때 (제 가족은 그 당시 미국에 있었구요!) 주말이면 청계천길을 홀로 걷곤 했답니다. 올 때 마다 드는 생각이 인국 1200만 명의 도시에 이런 곳이 있을 수 있다는 것이 대단합니다. 자연 그대로이며 너무나 고요합니다. 광화문광장처럼 완벽 그 자체입니다.
아이들도 너무나 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 제 아들은 청계천 다리 아래를 지날 때 마다 다리 천장을 만져 보려 했습니다. 제 딸은 그냥 물놀이에 빠졌죠. 개천물속을 거닐며 찬물에 발가락을 담그고 한 여름날을 보냈습니다. 너무나 즐거워서 얼마나 오래 걸었는지 모르겠습니다. 제 아내가 시장에서 옷감을 보여주고 싶어해서 동대문쯤 가서 멈추었죠.
아직 새로 생긴 광화문광장이나 청계천의 고요함을 느껴보지 못하셨다면 본인과 가족을 위해 한번 가보시면 어떨까요? 잠시 휴식을 취해 보세요. 서울이라는 대도시의 일상에서 벗어나 오아시스를 느껴 보실 수 있을 겁니다.
가족과의 나들이 중, TBS의 리포터가 저를 멈춰 새우더니 광화문광장에 대해서 어떻게 생각하냐고 질문을 하더군요. 제 답은 아주 간단하면서도 광화문광장에서의 저희 가족의 하루를 한마디로 표현하는 것이었죠. “ 완벽합니다. 완벽 그 자체에요.”

A Fun Day with the Kids
I am letting you into my life…a big step for me.
Okay, so while I was doing the Ride and Drive of the Matiz Creative in Busan, my wife called me to tell me that they had closed the school due to an outbreak of H1N1. She would have to home school the kids for 10 days before the school reopened. Ouch.
I was tired from the Ride and Drive, and I needed a break. So did the kids, who were bored with not being at school, so on Tuesday, I decided to take the afternoon off and take my family to Central Seoul to enjoy the Gwanghwamun Plaza and Cheonggyecheon.
The Gwanghwamun Plaza, the heart of Seoul, opened to the public Aug. 1 after 15 months of construction. For anyone, like me, who drives regularly in this area the construction was a pain in the ###. But the result was well worth the aggravation of driving in Seoul.
I have lived in three Asian cities and it takes a lot to impress me, but I think that the Gwanghwamun Plaza and Cheonggyecheon are spectacular. Absolutely perfect. It is world class and the Seoul Metropolitan government deserves a lot of credit for this wonderful urban development project.
I will not give you all a Korean history lesson, but let me tell you very briefly about it. The plaza restores Gwanghwamun’s significance as the center of Korea’s history, politics and culture with uninterrupted view of Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung, Mt. Bukak and Mt. Bukhan.
The Gwanghwamun Plaza is a place to experience history where a replica of the long forgotten Yukjo street has been created. It is also a pedestrian-centered space that connects Cheonggyecheon and yeongbokgung. The uninterrupted view of Mt. Bukhan is another reason to visit the Gwanghwamun Plaza.
The kids had a blast running in the fountains, dipping their feet in the water, and daring the ever-moving fountains to get them wet. There were smiles and giggles, and a lot of laughs. Nestled in front of the palace, I have to think that the king and ancestral Korean royalty would approve of this wonderful addition to Seoul.
After the Gwanghwamun Plaza, we dried off with ice cream at Baskin & Robbins (one polar bear and two praline cheese cake cones). We ate these along Cheonggyecheon. I used to walk here on weekends when I first came to Korea (when my family still lived in the U.S.), and no matter how often I come here, I cannot believe that something like this exists in a city of 12+ million. It is pristine. It is quiet. It is beautiful and like the Gwanghwamun Plaza, I think it is perfect.
The kids had a blast. My son tried to touch the ceiling of every bridge, and my daughter was totally into (and in) the water. She walked across the stream and wiggled her toes in the cool water on a very hot day. We were having so much fun; I do not even know how long we walked. But we stopped at the Dongdaemun, as my wife wanted to show me some things in the fabric market.
If you have yet to visit the newly opened Gwanghwamun Plaza or the serene Cheonggyecheon, do yourself (and your family a favor). Take a break and take it all in. Both of these - are an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of city life in Seoul.
During our afternoon, I was stopped by a television crew for TBS. The reporter asked me what I thought of Gwanghwamun Plaza. My answer to him was simple and I think it applied to my family’s entire afternoon: “Perfect. Just perfect.”
