모기업 GM으로부터 지난 주 약 5000억원을 지원 받았습니다. 이제 지엠대우는 1번 수익성을 확보하고, 2번 세계 최고의 차를 만드는 데 집중해야 할 시기입니다. 이제 다시 기본으로 돌아가서 세계시장을 위한 차를 디자인하고 개발해야 할 때입니다.
이제부터는 산업은행이 지엠대우 유동성문제에 대해 어떤 태도를 취하는 가에 대해서는 관심을 갖지 맙시다. 닉 라일리 GM해외사업부문 사장이 지난주 기자들과 만나 다음과 같은 관점을 제시했습니다.
• 지금까지의 지엠대우에 관한 산업은행의 발언들은 결국 부정확한 것으로 증명되었다.
• 산업은행은 지엠대우가 아주 힘겨운 상황에 놓여있다고 생각했지만 사실은 그렇지 않았다.
• 산업은행이 지엠대우의 경영에 대해 요구를 한 것은 공정하지 않으며 부적절하다.
산업은행은 다른 주주들과 마찬가지로 선택권이 있었습니다. 산업은행도 지엠대우에 추가 투자를 할 기회가 있었지만, 하지 않기로 결정했습니다. 하지만 GM은 새로 발행된 주식의 100%를 전량 사들였습니다. 결과적으로 GM이 이제 지엠대우의 70%이상을 소유하고 있습니다.
산업은행은 더 이상 언론에 협상 과정을 “흘릴” 이유가 없습니다. 이미 지난 일입니다. 사실이 모든 것을 말해줍니다. “익명의 관계자”의 말을 인용한 여러 보도는 불 난 집에 부채질 하는 효과가 날 뿐입니다. 불은 바로 지금 꺼야 합니다.
지엠대우는 이 이슈에 관해 더 이상 논의하지 않을 것입니다. 대신 우리는 GM의 이번 투자가 지엠대우와 지엠대우의 밝은 미래에 대한 확신을 바탕으로 한 것임을 인식하고 있습니다. GM의 신규투자를 통해 지엠대우의 성공이 바로 GM의 성공의 열쇠라는 사실을, GM에 있어 소중한 존재라는 사실을 여실히 보여주었다고 하겠습니다.
우리의 미래는 우리가 결정합니다. 그리고 우리의 미래야 말로 우리의 집중이 필요한 부분입니다.

“It’s time to stop worrying and start focusing”
Having secured almost KRW 500 billion in financing from General Motors Corp. last week, it is time for GM Daewoo to focus on (a) making money and (b) manufacturing the best vehicles in the world. It is time to get back to the basics and do what we really do well – design, engineer and manufacture vehicles for the world.
It is time to stop focusing on what the KDB is about GM Daewoo’s liquidity. Nick Reilly, the President of GM International Operations put things into perspective with the media this week. Among his strong comments (which I loved) were:
• KDB’s comments about GM Daewoo proved to be incorrect in the end.
• They thought that the company was in a weak position, but in fact, the company was not such a weak position as they thought.
• KDB’s policy change demands were unfair and completely inappropriate.
KDB had a choice – the same choice that all other shareholders had – and that was they could have invested in GM Daewoo, and they chose not to. GM, on the other hand, chose to purchase 100% of all available new shares. As a result, GM now owns more than 70% of the company.
There is no need for the KDB to continue “spinning” the outcome of this process in the media. What happened has happened. The facts speak for themselves. Regardless of what is said in the media, or the speculative stories written by journalists quoting unidentified officials accomplishes nothing more than fanning flames that should be extinguished – now.
At GM Daewoo, we are not going to engage in a public debate on this subject. Instead, we are going to recognize that GM’s investment was a vote of confidence in GM Daewoo and its bright future. It was a move that should demonstrate to all that GM recognizes that GM Daewoo’s success will be a key factor in its own global success.
We are in control of our future, and this is what we should be focused on.
