12주년을 맞는 한국지엠에서 청라 연구소는 핵심적인 역할을 담당하고 있는 곳입니다. 청라 연구소는 한국지엠의 신차 개발 기지로써 인천 경제 자유구역(In-cheon Free Economy Zone) 내 총 면적 508,228㎡ 규모부지에 주행시험로와 제동성능시험실, 조정안정시험실, 구조강성시험실, 환경풍동시험실, 진동소음시험실 등 다양한 연구시설을 갖추고 있습니다.
바로 이 청라연구소에는 '함께 일합시다!(Work Together!)'를 업무지침으로 500여명 연구원들을 이끄는 벽안의 리더, 크리스티안 슌헤르 전무가 있습니다. 크리스티안 슌헤르 전무는 독일인으로 지엠 유럽에 입사해 18년동안 지엠에서 근무했습니다. 2014년 3월 한국에 부임한 이후로는 미국과 유럽의 연구시설과 더불어 글로벌 지엠 신차 개발의 첨병 역할을 맡고 있는 청라 연구소에서 고객 만족을 위한 연구에 여념이 없습니다. 크리스티안 슌헤르 전무를 만나 청라 연구소와 한국지엠의 기술 개발에 대한 의지, 그리고 가족과 함께하고 있는 한국생활 이야기를 들어봤습니다.

안녕하세요. 저는 크리스티안 슌헤르입니다. (발음하기 좀 어려우시죠..^^;)
저의 본래 소속은 독일 뤼셀스하임에 있는 지엠 유럽입니다. 올 3월부터 청라연구소를 담당하고 있으며 한국 나이로는 53살입니다. 지엠에 입사한지는 약 18년정도 되었으며 약 18년 동안 다양한 업무와 나라에서 근무를 했고 현재는 이렇게 한국에서 새로운 경력을 시작하게 되었습니다.
가족으로는 18,19살의 사랑스런 두 딸이 있으며 늘 곁을 지켜주는 집사람이 있습니다. 최근 함께 한국에 오게 된 작은 딸은 한국에서의 새로운 경험과 더불어 즐거운 학교 생활을 하고 있고 얼마 전 대학에 들어간 첫째 딸은 방학이라 한국을 방문해 가족 모두 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있습니다.
청라 연구소는 이해하기 쉽게 말씀 드리자면 시뮬레이션 단계를 거친 개발 차량들이 이곳에서 다양한 테스트를 거쳐 고객의 니즈에 맞는 차량 개발을 돕는 곳이라고 이해하시면 되겠습니다.
현재 한국 뿐만 아니라 수출되고 있는 차량 및 차세대 버전의 차량까지 테스트를 담당하고 있습니다.
덧붙이자면 청라연구소와 같은 프루빙 그라운드는 현재 지엠 내에서는 전세계적으로 미국과 유럽 그리고 한국까지 3곳에만 있습니다. 그만큼 지엠에서 한국에 대한 기대와 책임감이 크다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

2007년 8월에 개관한 글로벌 지엠 3대 연구소 중에 하나. 연구원 500여명, 총 면적 508,228㎡, 30개 이상의 주행로와 제동성능시험실, 조정안정시험실, 구조강성시험실, 환경풍동시험실, 진동소음시험실 등 다양한 연구소로 구성되어 글로벌 차량 수요에 적합한 신차 개발 기지로 국내외 고객에게 최고가치의 차량을 부여하는 한편, 한국 자동차 산업에 이바지하고 있습니다.
네. 청라 연구소의 리더로서 직원들이게 '함께 일합시다(Work Together)' 마인드를 갖게 하는 것입니다.
적지않은 시간동안 지엠에서 근무를 하면서 느낀 점 중에 하나는 어떤 과제를 수행할 때 함께 고민하고 노력할 때의 시너지 효과가 혼자있을 때의 결과보다 훨씬 뛰어나다는 것입니다.
아마도 여러분들도 그런 경험이 있으시겠죠?
탁월한 품질의 차량을 개발하기 위해선 한 목표를 위해 함께 뛰는 것이 중요하며 또한 서로에게 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것도 빼놓을 수 없는 사항이라 생각합니다.
가장 중요한 부분은 바로 고객에게 집중하는 것입니다.
고객들은 우리들의 나침반입니다. 최종적으로 고객들에게 합당한 품질의 차량을 제공하고 기술로 고객들에게 즐거움을 주어야만 앞으로 점점 더 치열해 지는 자동차시장에서 우월한 위치를 선점할 수 있을 것입니다.
전기차 시장도 중요한 부분입니다. 전기차 시장은 앞으로 더 확대될 것이며, 지엠은 아시다시피 볼트나 스파크EV등 전기차에서 뛰어난 역량을 가지고 있어 더욱 경쟁력이 높아질 것입니다.
잘 어울렸는지 모르겠네요. 최근 시작한 한국어 레슨 시간을 통해 수문장 교대식에서 군관 복장을 입는 경험을 가지게 됐지만 경복궁에서 가족들과 함께한 조선임금의 곤룡포가 더 잘어울리는 거 같습니다. 하하.
이전 인도나 유럽 등의 다양한 곳에서 근무하긴 했었지만 한국에서 처음 근무를 하는 만큼 하루하루가 사실 즐거운 경험입니다. 다만 한국어를 배우는 일은 사실 쉬운 부분은 아니네요. ^^;
아마도 많이 들어보셨을 거에요. 저의 삶의 모토는 하루하루를 성실하게 사는 것입니다.
제 경험을 통해 얻은 사실 중 하나는 일을 할 때나 자기개발을 할 때나 무엇이든 꾸준히 진행하는 점이 중요하며 무엇보다 반드시 계획이 아닌 실행으로 이어져야 한다는 것입니다.
그리고 때론 성과나 결과가 원하는 방향으로 흘러가지 않을 수도 있지만 끈기를 가지고 늘 열린자세를 가지고 업무에 임하는 것이 아마도 현재의 저의 모습을 만들지 않았나 생각합니다.
절대 조급하게 생각하지 마시고 꾸준히 업무에 임하는 것이 정말 중요합니다. 그리고 틈틈히 조언을 줄 수 있는 멘토가 주변에 있다면 더욱 좋을 것 같습니다. ^^

[Interview] Christian Schonherr of Cheong-Na proving ground
Hello, readers! Do you know about GM Korea’s Cheong-Na proving ground?
Celebrating its 12th anniversary, Cheong-Na proving ground of GM Korea is playing a pivotal role. Cheong-Na proving ground, spanning 508,228㎡, is the hub of GM Korea’s new car development, located in Incheon Free Economy Zone. It has a diverse R&D facilities such as test tracks, Brake Performance Lab, Steering Control Lab, Body Structure Lab, Environment & Wind Tunnel Lab and NVH Lab.
In this place, there is Managing Director Christian Schoenherr, who leads roughly 500 engineers and technicians under the slogan of “Work Together!” He was born and raised in Germany, and joined GM Europe 18 years ago. Since assuming his job in Korea in March 2014, he has been dedicated to R&D for customer satisfaction at Cheong-Na Proving Ground , a frontline of GM International’s new car development along with R&D facilities in the US and Europe. I sat together with him at Cheong-Na proving ground to hear about GM Korea’s commitment to technology development and life of his family in Korea.
Would you please introduce yourself briefly?
Hello. My name is Christian Schonherr. (It is a bit hard to pronounce.)
I’m an employee of GM Europe, located in Russelsheim, Germany. Since March this year, I began to oversee Cheong-Na Proving Ground in GM Korea. I’m 53 years old. I have been working in GM for 18 years, during which I have worked in diverse fields and countries. Now my career has taken new twist and led me to Korea.
I have two lovely daughters, 18 and 19, and a caring wife. My youngest daughter recently came and joined us in Korea. Ever since, she’s been enjoying new experiences and new school life. Recently, the eldest daughter entered a university and she recently visited us during her school vacation and we are having a great time together in Korea.
It’s been almost half a year since you had started to work at Cheong-Na Proving Ground. (Welcome!) Could you introduce Cheong-Na Proving Ground to GM Talk blog’s reader ?
To put it simply, vehicles which are went through many simulation stages, are put to a various tests at Cheong-Na proving ground to meet customers’ needs. In Cheong-Na proving ground, we test vehicles not just for the Korean market but for export markets. We also test next generation vehicles.
In addition, there are only three Proving Grounds including this one in GM. As such, GM holds a high expectation and accountability on GM Korea.
GM Korea Engineering Center in Cheong-Na (GM Korea Cheong-Na Proving Ground)
Opened in August 2007, Cheong-Na Proving Ground is one of three major research centers in global GM. With 500 researchers and total space of 508,228㎡, it has more than 30 test tracks, Brake Performance Lab, Steering Control Lab, Body Structure Lab, Environment & Wind Tunnel Lab and NVH Lab and other test labs. As the hub of new car development with an eye on the global markets, we at works hard to ensure our products give the highest value to our domestic and overseas customers. By doing so, we also contribute to the advancement of Korean automotive industry.
Do you have a goal for your ISP period on GM Korea?
Yes. As a leader of Cheong-Na Proving Ground, I focus on encouraging employees to “Work Together” in team spirit. The impression I got while working in GM for no small amount of time is when we think together and work together to execute a project, it creates a synergy effect, producing way better results than working alone. I bet you have similar experience. To develop a superb quality car, working together towards a single goal is important. While doing that, people can have a positive influence on one another.
As you aware, Automotive market is getting more competitive by new cars and new technologies. What is the most important things to be a leading company in future automotive industry?
What’s most important is to focus on customers. Customers are our compass. Providing a quality product to customers ultimately and making customers pleased with our products will allow us to gain an upper hand in a fiercely competitive automotive market. Electrical vehicle market is crucial. Electrical vehicle market will grow going forward. As you may know, GM has an excellent capability, well-demonstrated in products like Spark EV and Volt.
I saw your picture, wearing Korean traditional apparel. That clothing looked quite good on you. When and where did you wear that?
At The Royal Guards changing ceremony. I don’t know if it suits me well. I had a chance to put on Royal Guard clothes at the Royal Guards Changing Ceremony in the Korean language class, which I started taking recently. But I think Gonryongpo, a royal robe, of King of Chosun Dynasty looks better on me. I had a chance to wear it when I visited Gyeongbokgung Palace with my family. Although I have worked in many countries such as India and Europe, every day I work here in Korea is an exciting experience. But learning Korean is not an easy part though.
Recently in Korea, many young people want to find their mentor. Do you have a good mentor? If you have, please tell me the most impressive things that you learn.
You must have heard a lot. My motto is live each day to the fullest. One of the lessons I have drawn from my past experience is that whether it is the project you work on or self-development you work on, slow and steady wins the race and action speaks louder than words. Sometimes outcome or results may turn out to be different from what I expected. Tenacity and open-mindedness made me who I am now. Don’t be hasty and rush. Keep focusing on the work that really matters. If you have a mentor who offers advice from time to time around you would be even better.
