우즈베키스탄에서의 첫날
제가 탄 대한항공편이 현지 시간으로 오후 5시(서울은 밤9시)에 타슈켄트공항에 안착했습니다. 서울에서 타슈켄트는 8시간 정도가 걸립니다. 어두운 날씨에 비도 많이 내렸습니다. 바로 차를 타고 공항으로 향했습니다.
타슈켄트는 우즈베키스탄의 수도입니다. 우즈베키스탄은 중국의 서쪽, 아프가니스탄의 북쪽, 카자흐스탄의 남쪽에 위치한 국가입니다. 우즈베키스탄의 인구는 약 2900만 정도, 타슈켄트는 400만 정도입니다. 넓은 길로 휙 내려서자마자 이 도시가 러시아의 영향을 많이 받았다는 것을 느낄 수가 있었습니다.
타슈켄트는 투박하지만 매우 역동적인 도시입니다. 어디를 보더라도 건물이 새로 들어서는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 중앙 아시아의 중심으로써, 타슈켄트는 새로운 르네상스를 맞이 하고 있습니다. 우즈베키스탄은 이슬람국가입니다. 여기저기에 아름다운 모스크들을 볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 새로운 빌딩들도 여기저기에서 새로 솟아오릅니다. 수 천 년의 역사를 지닌 이 나라는 지금 새로운 것과 오래된 것이 서로 섞이고 있습니다.
호텔방으로 들어가 밥을 먹고 몇 가지 일을 끝낸 다음 잠에 들었습니다. 내일부터는 바빠질 것 같습니다.
둘째날
오늘은 조금 일찍 시작했습니다. 오늘 하루 일정을 리뷰하기 위해 아카몬 사장과 다른 지엠대우 직원들을 7시에 만났습니다. 오늘 하루는 굉장히 바쁜 날이 될 것 입니다.
아카몬 사장은 우즈베키스탄 파워트레인 공장의 임원회의에 참석했습니다. 그 동안 남은 저희들은 우즈베키스탄의 새 직원들 옆에서 일을 했지요. 회의가 끝난 후, GMPT UZ(GM Powertrain Uzbekistan)에 새로 고용된 직원들과 차 한잔 같이 할 기회가 생겼습니다. 저는 그들이 열정적일 뿐만이 아니라 높은 수준의 경험과 학력을 지니고 있다는 사실에 놀랐습니다. 제가 만난 사람 모두가 그들이 지엠에 입사한 이유는 새로 시작하는 생산시설에서 일하고 싶었기 때문이라고 말했습니다. 이 직원들은 이것을 쉽지는 않은, 하지만 좋은 경험을 할 수 있는 기회로 판단하는 것입니다.
차를 마신 후, 우리는 타슈켄트 공항 바로 옆에 있는 지엠 우즈베키스탄 파워트레인 공장의 1주년 행사에 참가했습니다. 이 시설이 얼마나 빨리 지어지고 있는지는 정말 놀랍습니다. 1년 전, 이 곳은 농장이었습니다. 지금 이곳은 건물이 있고 계속 지어지고 있습니다. 완성되면, 지엠은 이곳에서 수출 및 아사카 공장에 수십만대의 엔진을 공급하게 될 것입니다.
건설현장 투어를 마친 후, 아카몬 사장은 지엠파워트레인 우즈베키스탄 공장의 직원들과 이야기를 나눴습니다. 아카몬 사장은 직원들에게 굉장히 자랑스러우며 그들의 노력으로 이 공장이 현실이 되는 것이라 말했습니다. 그는 지엠이 우즈베키스탄에 도움이 되는 훌륭한 기업이 될 것이며 또한 우즈베키스탄의 시장을 위한 큰 계획을 갖고 있음을 밝혔습니다. 우리는 타슈켄트에 최신의 시설을 짓고 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 이 시장에 새 제품을 출시할 계획을 갖고 있습니다. 또한, 우리는 이곳에서 1200명을 새로 고용할 것이며 지원할 것입니다. 비록 아직은 그 숫자에 미치지 못하지만 – 70명 밖에 없지만 – 그들의 마음은 우리와 통했습니다.
점심으로는 우즈베키스탄의 전통음식인 플로프 (Plov)를 먹었습니다. 어떤 음식이냐 하면, 플로프는 양고기와 함께 먹는 볶음밥입니다. 남자만이 요리할 수 있습니다. 여자는 절대 안됩니다. 플로프를 요리하는 동안 – 대략 5시간 정도가 걸립니다 – 남자들은 둘러 앉아서 삶에 관한 여러 가지 것들을 이야기 합니다. 방향이나 조언 같은 것들을 서로서로 주는 거지요.
우리가 오기 하루 전, 양 한 마리가 이 의식을 위해 희생되었습니다. 장로들이 축복의 의식을 했다고 합니다. 그 양이 바로 우리가 먹은 그 양입니다. 공장의 매니저가 말해주길 축복의 의식 없이 동물을 죽일 수는 없다고 합니다. 이 의식은 생일이나 결혼 같은 중요한 날에만 행해집니다. 양고기는 부드럽고 달콤했으며, 밥은 완벽하게 지어졌습니다. 보통은 손으로 먹습니다만, 우리 모두 정장을 입고 있었기 때문에 숟가락을 받았습니다. 디저트로는 맛있는 케이크를 먹었습니다. 맞습니다. 우즈베키스탄의 직원들도 지엠대우의 직원들 만큼 케이크를
좋아합니다.
그날 오후, 저와 아카몬 사장은 줄줄이 대사들을 만나, 우리 공장과 진행상황에 대한 브리핑을 했습니다. 좋은 반응들이 이어졌습니다.
8시에는 지엠 파워트레인 우즈베키스탄의 임원들과 저녁식사를 같이 했습니다. 식사시간 동안 공장과 오늘 하루에 대해 이야기를 나눴습니다. 10시쯤 마무리 하고 잠을 청했습니다. 긴 하루였지만, 아주 좋은 하루였습니다.
셋째날
6시에 아침을 먹고 30분 후 타슈켄트 공항으로 향했습니다. 이번엔 타슈켄트에서 50분 정도 떨어져 있는 Fergano로 갑니다. 그곳에서 우리는 UZAvto 와의 합작회사인 아사카 공장으로 갈 예정입니다.
Fergana는 타슈켄트의 북쪽에 있습니다. 더 춥죠. 산으로 둘러 쌓여 있습니다. 버스에 올라타고 사업계획을 살펴보기 위해 아사카 공장으로 향했습니다.
이 년 전, 이 공장에서는 약 14만대 정도를 생산했습니다. 올해는 22만대를 생산할 계획입니다. 마티즈, 넥시아, 토스카, 캡티바 그리고 다마스를요. 이곳엔 약 5000명이 근무하고 있습니다. 우리는 이곳 아사카 공장에 많은 투자를 했습니다. 조립라인의 중요 업데이트와 함께, 새 프레스샵, 바디샵도 생겼습니다. 이 공장은 매우 깨끗합니다. 또한 공장장인 게리 웨스트 전무의 자랑이기도 합니다. 게리 전무와 투어 중간에 이야기 할 기회가 있었습니다. 게리 전무는 이집트를 포함, 여러 흥미로운 나라에서 근무한 경험이 있습니다. 게리 전무는 이곳에서의 경험을 “삶을 바꿀 정도” 라고 하더군요. 매우 힘든 경험이었지만 보람이 있었다고 합니다.
그날 늦게 다시 타슈켄트로 돌아가서 합작회사 파트너 임원들과 저녁식사를 함께 했습니다. 웃음과 함께 보드카 건배가 이어졌습니다. 어제에 이어 또 다른 기분 좋은 하루입니다. 테이블에 앉은 사람들 모두 우리의 미래와 얼마나 빨리 이 시장에서 움직일 것인가를 끊임없이 이야기 했습니다.
UZAvto와의 파트너쉽은 우리에게 이익이 될 것입니다. 여기저기에 있는 기회를 잘 포착하는 훌륭한 회사, 그리고 거기에서 일하는 멋진 사람들입니다. 이는 또한 지엠대우에게 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다. 지엠에게도 좋을 것이고, 무엇보다도 우즈베키스탄에게 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다.
넷째날
아카몬 사장과 몇 명은 오늘 일찍 제네바로 떠났습니다. 아카몬 사장은 유럽에서 미팅이 있습니다. 기획 부문의 드웨넬 밀스 부사장과 저는 하루 더 있기로 했습니다. 드웨넬 부사장은 도쿄를 경유하는 디트로이트행 비행기를 타기 위해서이고 저는 아카몬 사장과 바쁜 일정을 소화하느라 이 나라를 제대로 보지 못했다는 생각에서 입니다.
아카몬 사장을 배웅한 후, 일을 좀 했습니다. 오후쯤, 드웨넬 부사장과 저는 지하철을 타고 Chorsu 시장으로 가기로 했습니다. 지하철 요금은 한화로 300원 정도였습니다. 깨끗하고 효율적으로 움직이는 것 같았습니다. 호텔에서 타고, 중간에 갈아탄 다음 시장으로 들어섰습니다. 빵 장수를 보자마자 한 덩어리를 샀습니다. 우즈베키스탄의 빵은 둥급니다. 직사각형이 아닙니다. 진짜 맛있습니다. 한 덩어리에 300원 정도 합니다. 드웨넬 부사장과 빵 먹으면서 걸어가며, 카펫과 칼 그리고 다른 무기들을 둘러봤습니다. 드웨넬은 가족들에게 줄 선물로 실크 베개 카바를 사고 전통 의상들을 한번 입어봤습니다. 드웨넬 부사장이 쇼핑 하는 동안, 저는 사람들과 이야기를 나눴습니다. 우즈베키스탄 사람들은 따뜻하고 기분 좋게 외국인을 받아들였습니다. 굉장히 친절했으며 외국인을 보자마자 미소를 짓곤 했습니다. 정말 좋았습니다.
시장 안쪽으로 더 깊이 들어가서 고기와 과일 그리고 야채상과 마주쳤습니다. 결국 견과류상에서 멈췄습니다. 잭팟입니다. 견과류들, 향료, 건포도 그리고 말린 과일들이 여기저기 있습니다. 저는 아이들에게 줄 건포도를 1키로 정도 샀습니다. 건포도는 입에서 녹을 정도로 맛있었습니다. 어디를 가든간에 점원들은 맛보라고 샘플을 권했습니다. 전부다 맛있었습니다. 아지즈 라는 타슈켄트 출신의 22살 청년을 만났습니다. 착한 청년입니다. 사진을 찍어도 되냐고 물어보니 제 어깨에 팔을 얹습니다. 드웨넬이 찍어줬습니다. 그에게서 캐슈넛과 피스타치오를 조금 샀습니다. 애들이 좋아할 것 같습니다. 정말 신선하고 맛있습니다.
점심은 길에서 파는 소고기 샌드위치로 해결했습니다. 샌드위치에는 소고기 뿐만이 아니라 양파와 토마토로 만든 소스가 들어있습니다. 한화로 천원 정도 입니다. 생각해보세요. 싸고 맛있습니다. 너무 맛있어서 그 가게로 돌아가 하나 더 사먹었습니다. 두 번째 샌드위치도 처음 먹은 것처럼 맛있었습니다.
점심을 먹는 동안 비가 내리기 시작해서 호텔로 돌아가기로 했습니다. 비가 내려서 다행이었습니다. 비가 오지 않았더라면 저랑 드웨넬은 거기서 하루 종일 있었을지도 모릅니다. 오 이런, 할 일이 있습니다. 우리는 컨퍼런스 콜을 하고 이메일을 쓰고 저녁을 먹기 위해 호텔로 돌아갔습니다.
드웨넬은 그날 밤에 떠났습니다. 그리고 저는 새벽4시에 차를 타기 위해 3시에 눈을 떴습니다. 6시에 타슈켄트를 떠나면서 창 밖을 보며 우즈베키스탄에서 이뤄야 할 일들을 생각했습니다. 다음 방문도 계획했습니다. 우즈베키스탄의 멋진 팀들과 앞으로 있을 흥분되는 계획들을 함께 할 생각을 하니 또 오고 싶어집니다.
좋은 여행이었으며, 많은 것을 얻었습니다. 다음은 제네바 입니다.

Uzbekistan Trip - Day 1
My Korean Airlines flight touched down shortly after 5 pm (local time) in Tashkent, or about 9 pm Seoul time. It is about an 8 hour flight from Seoul to Tashkent. It was dark and raining hard when I hopped in a car and headed for my hotel.
Tashkent is the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a land locked country west of China, north of Afghanistan and south of Kazakhstan in Central Europe. Tashkent has about 4 million residents while Uzbekistan’s population is about 29 million. As we whizzed down broad streets, I noticed a definite Russian influence on the city.
Tashkent is gritty, but it is also a very dynamic city. There is construction almost everywhere you look. As the hub of Central Asia, Tashkent is going through a renaissance. It is a Muslim country, so there are a lot of beautiful mosques, but at the same time, there are new buildings going up everywhere. It is a blend of the old and the new in a country steeped in thousands of years of history.
Checked into the hotel, had dinner, did a bit of work and then went to bed. The next two days are going to be very busy.
Uzbekistan Trip – Day 2
Today, was an early start. Met with President Arcamone and the GM Daewoo team at 7 am to go over the plans for the day. It is going to be a busy, very busy day.
President Arcamone took part on a Board Meeting of the GM Powertrain Uzbekistan plant, while the rest of us worked alongside many of the new employees. After the meeting, we had a chance to have a tea with new hires at GMPT UZ. I was struck not only by the enthusiasm of these new employees, but also, by their terrific experience and qualifications. All of them told me that they joined GM because they wanted an opportunity with a start up manufacturing facility. They see this as a huge challenge, but also the opportunity for a wonderful work experience.
After the tea, we went to take part in the One Year Birthday celebration of the GM Powertrain Uzbekistan facility, which is located next to the Tashkent airport. It is amazing how quickly this facility is being built. A year ago, this land was farms. Now there is a definite structure and work is progressing well. When it is complete, GM will produce several hundred thousand powertrain engines here for our Asaka plant and for export.
After we toured the construction site, President Arcamone spoke to the employees at GMPT Uzbekistan. He told them how proud he was of them and their hard work to make this plant a reality. He promised them that GM would be a good corporate citizen in Uzbekistan and that we had huge plans for the market. We are building a state of the art facility in Tashkent, and we plan to bring new products to market very soon. In all, we will eventually hire about 1200 people to work in this facility and to support it. While we are far away from these numbers now, with only about 70 employees, their hearts and minds are in the right spot.
For lunch we had Plov, a traditional Uzbek meal. Let me tell you about it. Plov is fried rice with mutton. It can only be made by men; never women. During the making of Plov, which takes about 5 hours, the men sit around and discuss their lives, their problems and any issues. They seek help, guidance and counsel from one another.
The day before our visit, a sheep was sacrificed for the celebration. Elders came to bless the sheep, which was to be used in our meal. I was told by the plant manager that you cannot just sacrifice animals without a blessing. This can only be done to mark major occasions – like birthdays, weddings and celebrations. The plov was eaten with Uzbek bread, and it was delicious. The mutton was tender and sweet and the rice was cooked perfectly. You usually eat this dish with your hands, or at least they used to eat with their hands, but because we were all wearing suits, we were given spoons. We followed up the meal with a wonderful cake. And yes, Uzbek employees like cake as much as GM Daewoo employees do.
In the afternoon, President Arcamone and I had a series of meetings with ambassadors, briefing them on our plans and progress. We received very positive comments and feedback.
At 8 pm, we had a dinner with GMPT UZ executives and talked about plans and revisited our day. We wrapped up dinner and 10, and then it was bed time. Night night. A long day, but a good day.
Uzbekistan Trip – Day 3
We ate breakfast a 6 am and then were off to the Tashkent airport at 6:30. Our destination: Fergano – a 50 minute flight from Tashkent. From Fergana, we were going to travel to our Asaka manufacturing facility, which is a joint venture with UZAvto.
Fergana is north of Tashkent and it was colder here, with mountains all around us. We jumped into a bus and drove an hour to our Asaka plant for a business plan review.
Two years ago, this facility manufactured about 140,000 units. This year, we will build 220,000 vehicles here – Matiz, Nexia, Tosca, Captiva and Damas. There are about 5000 employees in this JV .We have made significant investments in the Asaka facility. There is a new press shop, and a new body shop, with significant updating to the assembly line. The facility is very clean, and the pride of Gary West, its Managing Director. I had a chance to spend some time with Gary on the tour, and he has worked in some interesting places, including Egypt. He told me that his work at this facility was “life altering”. It is such a big challenge, but at the same time, very rewarding for him.
Late in the day, we flew back to Tashkent and had dinner with the executive team from our JV partner. There were some vodka toasts, and many smiles. It was another good day, and everyone at the table was keenly focused on one word – future – and one question – how quickly can we continue to move in this market?
Our partnership with UZAvto will pay dividends for us. This is an excellent group of people in a well-run company that sees opportunity everywhere it looks. This will be good for GM Daewoo. Good for GM and above all, good for the country of Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan – Day 4
President Arcamone and some others left Tashkent for Geneva early today. He has meetings in Europe. VP of Product Planning, Dwenell Mills and I elected to stay a day. Dwenell because he had to catch a night flight to Detroit via Tokyo and me, because after a whirlwind two days with the president, I did not feel that I saw the country or understood it that well.
So, after seeing off the President, I did some work. Mid day, Dwenell and I decided to get on the subway and head to the Chorsu market, or bazaar, the largest in the city. The subway cost the equivalent of KRW 300, and it was clean and efficient. We caught it in front of our hotel and after a transfer, we walked into bustling market. I saw a bread man, and immediately bought a loaf. The Uzbek bread is round – not rectangular – and it is really tasty and always fresh. It cost about KRW 300 for a loaf. As I walked with Dwenell and ate, we looked at carpets and knives and other weapons. Dwenell stopped and purchased a silk pillow case for his family, and tried on some traditional Uzbek garb. While he was doing this, I talked with people. The Uzbek people are warm and happy to have visitors in their city. They are extremely welcoming and when they see a foreigner, a smile immediately comes to their faces. It is really nice.
We walked further inside the market and came across meat and fruits and vegetables. Finally, we ended up on with the nuts. Jackpot. Nuts, spices, raisins, dried fruit – as far as the eye could see. I bought a kilogram bag of fresh raisins for my children. The raisins were sweet and almost melted in my mouth. Everywhere we walked shop keepers offered us samples of their best nuts and fruit. They were all delicious. I met Aziz, a 22 year old from Tashkent, who sells from a stall. He was a great guy. I asked if I could take his picture and he put his arm around me while Dwenell took the shot. I bought some cashews and some pistachio nuts from him. Again, the kids are going to love these. So fresh and tasty.
For lunch, we stopped at a busy stand selling beef sandwiches. They cut beef, but it between some bread, drop fresh onions on top and smear it with a tomato-based sauce. It cost about KRW 1,000. Imagine that. Cheap and good. So good, I went back for a second sandwich (I splurged). The second was as good as the first.
While having lunch it started to pour rain, which sent us back to the hotel. The rain was a good thing because without it, Dwenell and I may have spent the rest of the day there. Oh well, work beckoned so we headed back for conference calls, email and dinner.
Dwenell left that night and I woke up at 3 am the next morning for a 4 am ride to the airport. As my plane left Tashkent at 6 am, I looked out the window and started thinking about everything I needed to accomplish in Uzbekistan and started planning my next visit. Most importantly, I found myself looking forward to coming back and working with an excellent team on a series of exciting projects.
