오늘 보도된 한 매체의 “지엠대우 중국 이전설 파다한 부평…민심 ‘흉흉’” 이라는 기사는 아마도 제가 지금까지 읽어 본, 한국 기자분이 쓴 글 가운데 가장 말도 안 되는 기사가 아닐까 싶습니다. 정말로 이런 기사를 쓴 사람을 기자라고 호칭하는게 다른 기자 분들께 실례가 되지 않을까요?
본론으로 들어가겠습니다.
얼마나 말도 안 되는 이야기입니까. 이 기사는 지금까지 이 회사를 발전시키기 위해 우리가 지금까지 해왔고 앞으로 할 일들에 정면으로 배치되는 이야기입니다.
만약 우리가 중국으로 이전 한다면 (말씀 드리지만 절대로 이전하지 않습니다) 왜 GM이 지난 10월, 약 5억불 가량을 지엠대우에 투자했을까요?
만약 우리가 중국으로 간다면 왜 지엠대우가 인천 청라지구에 프루빙 그라운드(주행시험장)와 연구소를 세웠을까요?
만약 우리가 중국으로 간다면 도대체 왜 우리 공장의 생산 규모를 더 늘렸을까요? 우리가 기사와는 전혀 다른 방향으로 움직이는 것 같습니다.
만약 우리가 중국으로 간다면 왜 신차 출시를 위해 우리가 부평에 생산설비를 새롭게 꾸미고 있는 것일까요?
만약 우리가 중국으로 간다면 왜 우리는 최근 125명의 엔지니어를 새로 고용했을까요?
만약 우리가 중국으로 간다면 왜 글로벌 경차와 글로벌 소형차 개발 조직들이 아직도 계속 한국에 남아있는 것일까요?
무슨 말인지 아시겠죠: 우리는 한국을 떠나지 않습니다!
저는 열려있고, 정직하고, 솔직하며 한쪽으로 치우치지 않는 기사를 지지합니다. 한 때 기자였던 사람으로서 저는 언론의 자유를 믿습니다. 저 역시 헌법으로 보호받는 언론의 권리를 기꺼이 받아들입니다. 제가 참을 수 없는 건 어처구니 없는 이야기 입니다. 그리고 저는 “어처구니없다”라는 형용사 말고 위의 기사를 달리 표현할 방법을 모르겠습니다.

The article, “GMDAT rumored to move to China, stirring Bupyeong” in today’s www.asae.co.kr is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I have ever read in Korean media written by a journalist. Actually, I am wrong. To call the author of this story a journalist is a discredit to other journalists. So, to my journalist friends, I apologize. I should not have called the author of this article a journalist. It wasn’t fair to you all.
Back to the story…
What an idiotic story. This completely runs contrary to everything we have done and everything we are doing to build this company.
If we are moving to China (and we certainly are not), then why would GM invest almost US$500 million in GM Daewoo in October?
If we are moving to China, why would GM Daewoo have just built a brand new state of the art Cheong-na Proving Grounds and R & D Center?
If we are moving to China, then why the heck are we taking capacity up in our plants? Seems to me like we would want to head in the other direction.
If we are moving to China, then why are we retooling Bupyeong for a new vehicle launch?
If we are moving to China, then why did we just hire 125 engineers?
If we are moving to China, how come the global mini and global small car teams are still here?
You get my point. WE ARE NOT LEAVING KOREA!
I am all for open, honest, candid and unbiased stories. And as a former journalist, I fundamentally believe in free speech and freedom of the press. In fact, I embrace these constitutional charters. What I can’t stand though are stupid stories, and I simply cannot think of any other adjective than “stupid” to describe this one.
