품질향상은 나부터 시작한다.
지엠대우에서 우리 모두는 좋은 품질의 차를 만들어야 하는 함을 잘 알고 있으며 지금은 그 어느 때 보다 강조되고 있습니다. 이와 관련 지난 5일 2010년 품질 캠페인 발대식을 가지면서 품질에 대해 논의하고 ‘품질향상은 나부터 시작한다'는 전사적인 품질향상 캠페인을 전개하기로 했습니다.
1만7천명의 지엠대우 직원들은 진정한 차이를 만들기 위해서 품질향상이 반드시 필요하다는 생각에 동의하고 있습니다.
90분 동안 진행된 발대식에서 가장 특별했던 점은 추영호 노조지부장이 참석해 품질향상의 중요성을 강조한 것입니다. 제 생각에 이는 매우 정확하면서도 직접적인 것 이었습니다. 추영호 지부장은 ‘품질향상 없이는 생존할 수 없다’ 라고 말했습니다. 잠시 이 말에 대해 생각해 봅시다. 무서운 말이지만 지부장은 옳았습니다. 지엠대우가 단지 세계적인 자동차가 아닌 세계 최고의 자동차를 지속적으로 만들기 위해서는 품질향상이 필요합니다. 추영호 지부장은 ‘품질향상을 위해서는 전사적인 노력이 필요하고, 노동조합과 생산직 직원도 품질 캠페인에 적극적으로 참여하고 품질향상을 위해 노력할 것이다”라고 했습니다. 더불어 품질향상을 위해 필요한 두 가지 부분을 지적했습니다.
1. 보다 조립 용이성이 높은 부품개발을 위해 제품개발 단계에 생산직원을 참여시키는 것이 필요하며,
이는 오사양 장착을 감소시킬 것입니다.
2. 부품 구매시 단지 단가를 따지는 대신 고품질 부품을 구매해야함. 이는 결함발생과 향후 품질보증 문제를
감소시킬 것 입니다.
아카몬 사장은 늘 그러하듯이 예리한 지적과 함께 발대식을 마쳤습니다. 그러나 그 메시지는 간단했습니다.
• 우리의 성과는 향상되어야 합니다.
• 우리는 올바른 품질을 이뤄내야 합니다.
• 우리는 문제를 곧바로 바로잡아야 합니다.
• 개개인 그리고 우리모두가 책임을 다해야 합니다.
또한, 아카몬 사장은 ‘품질향상은 여행이며, 우리는 세계 최고의 반열에 오를 수 있는 자산을 가지고 있다’ 라고 말했습니다. 그는 우리 모두가 지엠대우 직원으로서 품질의 차이를 만들기 위해 할 수 있는 일을 고민하고, 현재 우리가 최고의 노력을 다하고 있는지 우리자신에게 묻자고 말했습니다. 그러나 유감스럽게도 저의 대답은 ‘우리는 최고의 노력은 다하고 있지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 더욱 더 잘할 수 있습니다’ 였습니다.
이에 오해는 없으시기 바랍니다. 저의 대답은 최고의 노력을 행동으로 옮기기 위한 것 이었습니다. 저는 회사 전체가 ‘품질향상은 나부터 시작한다’ 는 품질향상 캠페인을 기꺼이 받아들일 것이라고 자신하고 있습니다. 또한 그 결과는 단지 한국에서만이 아닌 전세계에서 인정받는 최고 품질의 자동차 생산일 것 입니다.
이제는 완벽을 추구해야 할 때입니다.

Quality Starts With Me.
At GM Daewoo, we are fully aware of the fact that we need to build higher quality vehicles. The whole organization is focused on this right now. In fact, yesterday afternoon, all Directors met to discuss Quality and to launch a new campaign called Quality Starts with Me.
We are 17,000 people strong at GM Daewoo, and it is absolutely necessary that each one of us embrace quality improvement in order for to make a real difference.
What was very unique about this 90 minute session was that for the very first time, the Labor Union Chairman, Young ho Chu, addressed executives about this. The first words out of Chairman Chu’s mouth, I thought, were absolutely dead on correct, and very straightforward. He said, “unless we improve our quality we cannot survive.” Think about it. Let it sink in for a minute. Scary stuff, I know, but he is right. Our quality needs to improve for GM Daewoo to continue producing not just world-class, but the world’s BEST vehicles. Chairman Chu continued, saying, “The labor union will participate in this campaign and the shop floor will accept its responsibility.” Furthermore, in case anyone doubts the labor union’s commitment to quality, he said, “I accept our commitment to quality improvement.” He pointed out two areas where the union sees a need for improvement:
1. Product Engineering needs to engage with the shop floor workers to develop parts that are easier
to put into vehicles. This will cut down on any manufacturing mistakes.
2. Purchasing should focus more on high quality parts instead of just cost. This will cut down on
any defects or future warranty issues.
President Arcamone ended the session with typically pointed remarks, but his message was simple:
• Our performance needs to improve
• We need to get quality right
• We need to fix problems immediately
• Each and every one of us needs to hold ourselves accountable
President Arcamone continued saying “quality is a journey, but we have the tools to achieve best in the world status.” He asked us all, as GM Daewoo employees, to reflect on what we can do to make a difference in quality, and to ask ourselves if we are “doing the absolute best that we can do?” As I sat there, my answer, unfortunately, was “no we are not doing our absolute best, and yes, I think we can do better, much better.”
Make no mistake about it. This was a call to action. I am totally confident that this whole company will accept the proposition that “Quality Starts with Me,” and the end result will be production of not just the highest quality vehicles in Korea, but in the world.
Time now to embrace perfection.
