지난주에 미국에서 친구들이 왔습니다. 지난 토요일에 그 친구들을 전쟁기념관에 데리고 갔습니다. 저는 이미 한국에서의 지난 2년 동안 박물관만큼이나 멋진 이곳 기념관을 네 번이나 방문했습니다. 저는 이 곳이 세계적인 수준의 시설 이라고 생각합니다. 만약 서울에서 무언가 특별한 것을 찾는 분이라면 꼭 한번 들러야 할 곳이죠. 아이들이 좋아할 겁니다.
평화의 광장 (4,5,6,10,11월의 매주 금요일 오후 2시에는 이곳에서 의장대의 멋진 의전행사가 열립니다) 을 중심으로 한 이 거대한 전쟁기념관은 1994년도에 완공이 되었습니다. 이 기념관은 옛날 육군사령부가 서있던 곳에 지어진 것입니다. 20,000 미터의 넓이의 이 건물은 3개의 층에 걸쳐 13,000개가 넘는 아이템들로 채워져 있습니다.
1층으로 들어서면 거북이 모양의 전함이 눈에 띕니다. 1대 2.5의 비율로 제작된 이 모델은 임진왜란 당시 이순신 장군에 의해 개발된 조선해군의 군함입니다. 이 배들은 여러 번 출전했으며, 일본을 물리치는데 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 일층은 한국의 전쟁역사에 초점이 맞춰져 있습니다. 놋쇠 투구와 갑옷도 보입니다. 살수대첩과 귀주대첩을 이야기 하고 있습니다. 한국 전쟁사를 흥미롭게 이야기 하고 있습니다.
이층과 삼층은 6.25 전쟁을 기념하고 있습니다. 메모리얼홀, 한국전쟁관, UN군 기념관, 한국 육군관, 무기, 비디오 (한국어와 영어로) 등등 다양한 볼거리로 가득 차 있습니다. 즉, 두 층 전체가 한국전쟁을 다루고 있으며, 각층에서 몇 시간씩 봐도 지겹지가 않습니다.
밖에 있는 기둥에는 한국전쟁의 전사자들의 이름이 새겨져 있습니다. 야외에도 볼거리들이 펼쳐져 있는데, 비행기, 전차, 헬리콥터, 대포, 군용지프 등등이 전시되어 있습니다. 아이들이 좋아할 것 같군요.
이곳이 세계에서 가장 큰 전쟁기념관이다 라고 누군가 저에게 말해주더군요. 그게 사실이든 아니든 중요하지 않습니다. 여러분이 아직 한번도 가본적이 없다면, 여러분은 중요한 것을 놓치고 계시다고 말씀 드리고 싶습니다. 이 독특한 역사적 유물을 아침이든 오후든 한번 가서 즐겨보세요.

The War Memorial of Korea
We had friends from the United States visiting last week, and we took them to the War Memorial of Korea on Saturday. I have been to this excellent museum-like facility four times in the past two years, and I think it is world class – definitely worth a stopover if you are looking for something to do in and around Seoul. And, your kids will love it.
Anchored by the Peace Plaza (where there is an Honor Guard Ceremony every Friday at 14:00 April, May, June, Oct. and Nov.), this huge War Memorial was completed in 1994. It stands on the ground where the old Army Headquarters used to be located in Yongsan-dong. This 20,000 meter facility houses 13,000 items on three floors.
When you walk in on the first floor, you will immediately see a turtle-shaped battleship, which is a 1:2.5 scale model of the Joseon Dynasty warship developed by Admiral Yi, Sun-sin during the Japanese invasions. The ships were used in numerous battles and played a critical role in defeating Japan at sea. The first floor is dedicated to the History of War in Korea. Visitors will see a brass nail helmet and armor, the story of the Great Victory at the Slasu River and the Great Victory at the Kwiju. Really interesting historical lesson on Korea at war.
The second and third floors are dedicated to the Korean War. Visitors will experience the Memorial Hall, the Korean War Room, The Expeditionary Forces Room, the ROK Armed Forces Room, weapons, videos (in Korean and English), battle simulations, clothing from the era, notes, dispatches, etc. In short, the Korean War plays out on two floors, and you could spend hours on either of these floors.
Outside, etched in columns, are the names of the fallen in the many Korean wars. There is also an Outdoor Exhibition Area where huge planes, tanks, helicopters, guns and jeeps are displayed. Kids love the Exhibition area.
I was told by someone that it is the largest War Memorial in the world. Whether it is or isn’t doesn’t matter. If you have not visited it, you are missing out. It’s that simple. So go and enjoy a morning or an afternoon at this unique historical timepiece.
