아름다운 초여름 날씨입니다. 오늘 우리가 이곳 지엠대우에서 했던 것 같이, 사회 복지단체에 35대의 차를 기증하기에 완벽한 날입니다. 재단창립이래, 지엠대우 한마음재단은 165대 이상의 차량을 여러 사회봉사단체들에 기증했습니다.
개인적인 이야기를 잠시 해보겠습니다. 괜찮겠죠? 오늘 아침의 시작은 그리 좋지 못했습니다. 하지만, 이 행사에 참가하여 장애인들과 불우한 이웃을 헌신적으로 돕는 진정한 영웅들을 만나고 나서 생각이 바뀌었습니다. 한 남자분께서는 오늘 받은 차량으로 결손가정을 돕는데 쓰겠다고 말해주셨습니다. 또 다른 여자분께서는 오늘 받은 마티즈로 몸이 불편한 분들을 더욱 빠르고 쉽게 치료시설로 옮기는데 유용하게 쓰겠다고 하셨습니다. 어떤 세 젊은 분들은 오늘 기증받은 차량으로 어르신들을 여러 행사로 모시는데 쓰겠다고 합니다. 한 젊은 여자분은 어르신들께 드릴 음식과 필요한 물품들을 운반하는데 사용하려 하구요.
오늘의 행사로 잠시 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 저는 오늘 연설 내용을 바꿨습니다. 왜냐하면, 35대의 차량을 기증받은 이 단체들이 저희에게 감사의 마음을 표현했지만, 사실은 우리가 오히려 감사해야 한다 라고 생각했기 때문입니다. 가장 도움이 필요한 사람들을 지원하는 것에 대해, 지치지 않고 늘 웃음을 띄며 봉사활동을 하는 것에 대해, 불우한 이웃들을 위해 한국을 좀더 나은 곳으로 만들려는 의지로 가득 찬 그분들의 따뜻한 마음에 대해서 말이지요.
그래서 오늘, 차를 받아 저에게 감사를 표하는 그분들 가운데서, 새 차를 받고 기뻐하는 그분들의 흥분 속에서, 저는 그분들의 활동에 다시 감사 드렸습니다. 한국 곳곳에 꿈과 희망을 전하는데 그분들이 저희 회사차량을 써준다면 더할 나위 없겠습니다.
“Beautiful Feet”
Today is a beautiful early summer day. The perfect day to give away vehicles which is exactly what we did today at GM Daewoo by donating 35 vehicles to social welfare organizations across Korea. Since its foundation, the GM Daewoo Employee Foundation has donated more than 165 vehilcles to very deserving organizations which are making a big difference in touching so many lives of those who need help the most.
Let’s get personal for a moment, okay? My day began with issues, problems, and concerns. However, participating in this event, meeting true heroes, who are dedicated to helping the disadvantaged, disabled and underprivileged every day, really put things into perspective for me. One man told me he will use the vehicle to help disadvantaged families. Another woman will use the Matiz to help the disabled get to medical treatments easier, faster and more efficiently. Three young men will use their vehicle to take the elderly to events, and a young woman, to provide the elderly with food and supplies.
The event gave me pause to stop and think for a moment. I changed my speech as I spoke because it occurred to me that while these people and these 35 organizations were very thankful for the new cars, it really should be us, thanking them…for their undying support of those who need help the most; for tirelessly doing their work with smiles on their faces, and with huge hearts full of a desire to make Korea a better place for those who are not as fortunate as many of us.
So today, in the midst of people thanking me for their new cars and light trucks, amidst all of the chaos that comes with the excitement of getting a new car, I thanked them for their hard work and it is my hope that they will use these GM Daewoo vehicles to continue to deliver dreams and hope to every corner of Korea.
