I was in Shanghai from Sunday for the Shanghai Auto Show and then on to Liuzhou today with US media for a tour and ride and drive of our SGM-Wuling facility.

Some impressions.

GM China announced its intention to double its sales to 5 million vehicles by 2015 in the world's largest auto market. GM will roll out more than 60 new and upgraded models in China during the next five years. At the Monday press conference our GM executives described the plan as ambitious, but noted that GM and its Chinese partners doubled their sales between 2008 and 2010 to 2.3 million vehicles. GM China expects growth to come from new brands, such as the affordable Baojun brand that we are establishing with our Chinese venture partners, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. and Wuling Motors. Additionally, we announced that the Chevrolet brand will bring out 15 new models and upgrades, ranging from affordable small cars to midsize sedans, in the next five years, while Buick will introduce 12 new and upgraded products featuring new technology as well as fine styling and interiors.

I loved the launch of the sleek Buick concept, called Envision, a plug-in hybrid Envision SUV with a panoramic roof and butterfly-wing doors. The Monday afternoon reveal was a spectacular show involving Buick dealers from across China, a female Celine Dion-like singer, ballet dancers and culminated with the Envision being dropped from the ceiling at the Shanghai Expo Center. The Envision was developed in China by Shanghai GM's Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center. I thought Envision made a confident and significant statement about future Buick design cues and technology.  It is a terrific looking vehicle. Our Chevrolet Miray unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show followed by the Buick Envision demonstrates that our global design studios really "got it going on".

At the Shanghai Motor Show, GM China announced that Camaro would be coming to market. Note the price of US$70,000 is almost $30,000 more than we are selling it for in Korea. Also, GM China revealed the Chevrolet Captiva, which our Korean media have had good things to say about in articles and postings of their April ride and drives.

The hero vehicle was no doubt the global premiere of the Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan. I loved it.

The exterior is smart and sleek and the rear tail lights and treatment remind me of Camaro. The interior is absolutely luxurious. It'll be sold in 100 countries and we'll start production in Korea soon. Again, I think we have a hit on our hands with Malibu, and if yesterday was any indication, we do.  Our stand, and particularly Malibu, was absolutely packed all day and I would think it was the busiest at the show. The excitement and energy felt good - real good. It also felt good to see so many of our competitors spending so much time on our stand.

Wednesday and Thursday I am at SGMW (SAIC - GM - Wuling) in Liuzhou, a city of about a million people a 2.5 hour flight from Shanghai (southwest).

Liuzhou Wuling was formed in 1958 as a tractor plant. In 1985, the state-owned company began building mini commercial vehicles.

In 2002, SAIC (our Chinese partner), GM and Wuling formed a three way joint venture, called SGMW. SAIC owned 51.1%, GM 34% and Wuling 14.9%. In 2010, GM upped its stake and now owns 44%, SAIC 50.1% and Wuling 5.9%.

The story of this company is a story of success. When GM and SAIC bought majority stakes in it in 2002, Wuling sold 147,000 vehicles. Last year, it sold 1.23 million vehicles - an eight fold increase in eight years. In December 2009, SGMW became the first company in China to sell 1 Million vehicles. Our market share in 2002 was 19%. Last year, it was 39.4%. In 2002, SGMW was number 1 in five of China's 32 provinces. Last year, it was number 1 in all but 5 provinces!!!

And let me tell you - they are all really fun to drive. Road warriors for China's small business people.

Cheers or should I say, zaijian.
