"To Chevy or not to Chevy?"
This was the number one question on the minds of Korean media at the North American International Auto Show. They repeatedly asked President & CEO Mike Arcamone whether GM will bring Chevrolet to Korea, and if so, when. So, let me make a couple of points, based on what President Arcamone told media here.
First, President Arcamone's goal is to make his decision by the end of Q1. GM Daewoo senior leadership have provided him with a study as well as opinions on the question. He is going to analyze the study and the opinions and make a decision.
That said, President Arcamone cautioned that there are complexities to this and if he does not make a decision by the end of March, he will tell employees and media why and provide them with a status update. His hope though, is to make a decision.
Before you ask me the next question (what do you think he will do as far as decision timing?), let me answer it. President Arcamone is decisive and moves with speed. I would expect a decision before the end of March. He does not like issues hanging around for months and this issue's life span is short, not long.
Second, here is what we are looking at:
1. Should we eliminate the GM Daewoo brand and move to Chevrolet?
2. Should we bring Chevrolet into Korea and run it, or let it co-exist with GM Daewoo and Cadillac?
3. Should we stay with the GM Daewoo brand in Korea and not bring Chevrolet to the domestic market?
